Hello,

I have recently been conditionally hired on two units upon completion of my NCLEX exam in early September. I am wondering, is accepting only day shifts a faux pas? I plan on seeking a 3rd causal position so I can keep reach a full time schedule of only day shifts.

Please advise.

How would it be? Where did you even get this idea from?

I think I understand that you are asking if it is ok for you to state to your employer that you can only work day shift? Did your conditional offer not specify a shift? If that is the case, no, you probably can't dictate your preference, you most likely won't have a choice. If you do, that's great, but would be unusual.

So yes, it would be a faux pas to state that you will only accept day shifts.

You can say you will only do days BUT you will need multiple jobs to make a full cheque. My staffing office requires you do shift. If you hold out for just days there will be times when you get zero hours (think the slow times like Christmas and January, beds are closed and regular staff are encouraged to take time off).

If you are willing to take calls for the morning of a sick call you will be popular.

Very popular indeed. Once heard of a nurse who only did this kind of work in extended care home health. She had all the work she could ever want.

Of course I've been doing this a long time and paid my dues so to speak. I made the shift several years ago to working 5 8hr shifts a week and every other weekend. It may seem like a lot but I work with a core staff of truly wonderful people. I am home every after noon for my son's sports and school activities and to enjoy dinner with my husband. I also get to see my son every morning before he leaves for school. I do an occasional PM or Noc shift for time and a half plus differential.

As a new hire your options may be limited and making demands may not be a good idea.
