Hi!!

I have been a LPN for the past  5 years and I  work in LTC . I recently called Excelsior and was told they had made some changes to the ASN  RN program . I  was wondering if anyone took NUR 250 and went for the clinical portion of the class. If yes, can you share your experience with me. 

 

 

It is a practical exam or a clinical rotation?

RebeccaG26,                                         I just got done with my prerequisites. I’m  going to start NUR 108 next week. Sorry, I’m not there yet, I was asking just to understand the changes that were made to the LPN to RN program.Congratulation on making it this far. I hope someone else can chime in.

Excelsior College Associate Degree nursing program recently lost its accreditation with the ACEN, and a lot of state nursing boards have stopped licensing Excelsior grads.  I was one of their LPN to RN grads way back before any of this happened, passed NCLEX-RN on the first try with 75 questions.  Finding a job as an RN afterwards was nearly impossible.  Even now, it still affects me some.  Do yourself a favor, go to a traditional school where you will get a better education that will be accepted more.  You will also finish a lot quicker in a traditional program and your credits will transfer easier if you ever decide to continue your education somewhere else.

So you had your RN and potential employers wanted to know where you went to school?  Excelsior was a deal breaker?   I have to say, I've not heard of this being an issue once licenced before now.

I am also curious about the clinical experience. Have you started it? What are your opinions on the rotations, is it educational or more like a test environment? Thanks in advance!

I will be taking the course soon too and would love for any feedback! I’m trying to figure out where the clinical sites are and how long they last as well as what to expect from the clinical experience! TIA!

  ACEN means little to nothing when taking Excelsiors program. You can call Excelsior and ask them if your state accepts Excelsiors degree and transcripts so you can sit for the NCLEX-RN.  I graduated 11 months ago from Excelsior, took my NCLEX-RN 2 months after that and haven't looked back.  

  As far as you will finish a lot quicker in a traditional program, I beg to differ.  I took my time in the Excelsior program. I took all my general credits as online classes but when it came time for the nursing classes part, at the time (2017) , Excelsior allowed students to pay $335.00 and challenge the nursing classes  by testing out at a Pearson Due testing center.  There were 8 nursing classes when I went through the nursing program. I started on challenging the tests in July of 2018 on a Thursday, passed the test (you find out right away) and when I got home from the test, I logged on and paid another $335.00 and scheduled the next nursing classes test for the very next Thursday.  I tested out of every single nursing class and did this in a 7 week time span.  As I understand it now Excelsior only lets students test out of the general ED. classes.  But the money, and time, that I saved by going through Excelsior could not be beat.

   So fast forward to NCLEX-RN day.  There was another candidate there who was taking her NCLEX-RN for the 5 time and she went to a brick and mortar school.  

 

   Now would I recommend the rigorous path of testing out of every nursing class like I did, absolutely not.  I was in a peculiar situation where I had been a 911 and critical care paramedic for over 20 years and had developed the skills and knowledge to allow me to confidently challenege the tests and be successful.  But it really bothers me when some who only have a passing knowledge of the ins and outs of Excelsior try to dissuade another from attempting the program when they don't have the full knowledge to give a fully informed opinion.

Can you share your experience with NUR250, especially about the clinical (what is expected. I will be taking this class next month. Thanks for sharing.
