Excelsior LPN-Rn Accepted in Ohio?

One of my co-workers got her RN here in Ohio thru Excelsior.

I would call the board of OHIO and find out if they are still taking them. The last time I called the OBN they told me they were working on not taking Excelsior because of the lack of actually clinical and other various reasons but that is one of the solid reasons she gave

I agree with the above poster that suggested contacting the Ohio Board of Nursing...I have a friend that attends Excelsior and has had several issues with this school. Among her many complaints, one of the most important was the ridiculous fees that are required. For the overall cost of attendance at this school, she could have easily entered into a program at the local community college for MUCH cheaper.

Luckily, she is trying to transfer into a Nursing program at a community college in her area.

I am not sure where your friend would finder a cheaper way to go thru an RN program except thru Excelsior. Each class at Excelsior is $220(I think it may have gone up July 1st-maybe its $250), where a class in traditional is what $500, then the purchase of books. For Excelsior, you can buy used books, notes whatever off of ebay or previous students. The enrollment fee is around $900 but it is still cheaper than traditional school when you add up books, uniforms, gas, parking, babysitting fees, ect.

And the wait list at most community colleges is long, some 2 years.

Now if your friend was thinking of using College Network, then that would explain why she thought it to be expensive. College Network makes the price go double, because you pay them, and Exclesior College. But you can go directly thru Excelsior College.

I am an Excelsior grad and I was licensed in Ohio with no problems. That being said, please contact the OBN and confirm this with them.

Traditional programs are not necessarily more expensive than excelsior.There are other factors than just uniforms and gas. You have to think of what things actually matter as far as what you want to get out of the school. I personally know of programs in OHIO that are cheaper as far as money and time are concerned( than excelsior)

Anywho just call the board of nursing and do your research.When it all comes down to it you have to rely on yourself and the info you have collected. Good Luck

Thanks for the posts folks I just passed PN NCLEX and was wanting to go to excesior for RN. I agree with contacting the OBN to make sure before wasting time.

For what its worth, this is the reply I got from the ohio nursing board about this question:

"Since this program is not based in Ohio, the Ohio Board of Nursing can not directly approve the program. However, Ohio

does honor distance or on-line programs that have been approved by

other state boards of nursing. I believe that Excelsior is based in New York.

Therefore, you would have to contact the New York State Board of

Nursing to make sure that the program has been approved by that state's

board of nursing. If the program is approved by the New York State

Board of Nursing, then Ohio will honor the program and you would be able to apply to take the NCLEX to become licensed in Ohio, after you have completed the program." (reply recd on may 30th 2008)

and this is the response after i wrote to NY board of nursing

"Excelsior College is part of the New York State University System and is an accredited school. Graduates of Excelsiors online programs are eligible to sit for the NCLEX RN exam."

this was recd on 2nd june 2008.
