Excelsior College questions

Published

hello..im an LPN and im looking to get my RN with an online school because i am very busy with a full time job, 5 kids and a husband...i am looking into excelsior college and i have afew questions:

1. does this program have anything to do with the college network?

2. is this program accredited in Ohio?

3. can i buy my materals on ebay to cut donw costs?

4. do you bascially read the books and then take the tests online?

5. do you have to go to New York to do the final 3 day test?

6. i looked at their site and it seems like they have fees for everything..is it really going to cost me a ton if i can transfer some credits in? i dont want to be slapped with crazy bills all the time..and if i can buy some of the books or materials on ebay hopefully that will cut it down..

7. do you think this program is worth it? i paid $19,000 for my LPN, hopefully it will be less than that, lol.

thank you so much for any input on this....i really really really want to enroll!!!

Hi! There is a ton of info in the distance learning forum. Here is a link to the sticky thread. Hope that helps! :)

consider online programs thru schools in your state. They are very common and usually much less expensive. When buying books online be sure to use the ISBN number so you get the exact book & edition you need. My online program involved assignments requiring lots of reading and research with interpretive essays or other activities.

The COLLEGE network isn't a college at all and they do NOT give out college degrees. They just sell you study guides for big $$ so that you can study for a real college education. These same materials are available on ebay.

im sorry, but were did you go to lpn school?? i went to college on and off for 7 years, changed my major a couple times, ended up getting my lpn and returning again for my rn for less than 7,500!

not that it matters, but iowa does not recognize them as an accredited school of nursing. you can get a education through them, but you must work as a lpn for atleast 2 years first, and then i think you have to do a preceptorship or something like that with a rn after completing the courses and then can sit for boards. i worked with someone who went through that program, and most of it is self courses, but she had to travel long distances to go to clinicals. i have also heard that excelsior is very expensive

As of 2008 (at the time of my correspondence with the Iowa BON, and I don't imagine it's changed), Iowa definitely accepted Excelsior students. There were no other work or preceptor requirements imposed by the BON as you stated in order to sit for boards and be licensed in Iowa. Their only requirement is that the college has to be accredited in its home state (New York in Excelsior's case), which it most certainly is. Getting to the clinical exam is a pain, but there are several sites in Wisconsin that are a several-hour drive from Iowa, depending on where one is. It's better than some other students in other states who have no choice but to fly far from home.

However, Excelsior IS most definitely expensive.
