Excelsior College Question (newbie)

Published

Hello everyone!

I'm starting my Excelsior College LPN to RN journey today (through EC itself, NOT college network). I have just purchased and downloaded some notes from studygroup101. Im studying to take the transitions test and health safety test prior to enrolling to see if this program is really meant for me. I just have 1 question to ask. Which test are LPNs allowed to exempt from the list of tests that we need to take?

Thanks and good luck to the people who have already graduated or who are currently in the process of completing.

Specializes in ICU.

Howdy, and welcome to the forum. As far as what tests you are exempt from...if you've graduated within the last five years, you don't have to take Health Differences. This is the only nursing exam you can exempt out of. As far as your general ed's, it all depends on what you've taken in LPN school, and what they'll give you credit for.

Really the only way to find out is to do the 75 dollar eval and let them tell ya. Good luck :)

Thank you very much. I already have my gen ed courses completed. Did you graduate from EC?

Specializes in ICU.

No, i'm still in progress myself :) finished with gen eds and have several of the nursing exams done...my goal is to be done with the nursing concepts by christmas :)

Specializes in pedies and er.

SO, if you've been an LPN for a zillion years.....you DO need health differences? It's only if you have graduated w/in 5 years, that you DON'T NEED IT?

i think so. they used to just automatically waive it for you if you hold an lpn license. that was the case when i started in 2009. that is why you should do it now as they make changes all the time including raising the tuition fees. and you never know maybe another stupid state will follow california and maryland and not allow you to practice as an rn in their state.

Specializes in med/surg, geriatrics, corrections.

It really is worth the $75 to have your transcripts evaluated. You are doing the right thing by taking Health Safety and Transitions before enrolling. That is what many of us have done. Why pay enrollment if you find self study isn't for you? I mention the eval. because in many cases you may "think" you have all the gen. ed. credits needed but Excelsior may not count some of them. I had 31 credits going in but Excelsior only counted 21. You also have to have the Information Literacy course, it's only one credit and it's best to take it through PennFoster but that's a story for another post. The CC I went to didn't require Micro so I had to take that also. Also, in many cases psych. credits have a shelf life(usually 7 yrs). I'm not sure about EC policy on that though. Personally, I thought Health Safety was a walk in the park and Transitions is just a LOT of memorization. OK, I've rambled enough, I know I went off topic but I do that a lot. Good Luck!
