Excelsior College now requiring the TEAS for ADN program, suspends application acceptances

Published

Just a head's up! New student application acceptances are suspended at this time to allow students to prepare for the TEAS. Controlling the number of new students will also help manage the CPNE wait time. Information is here:

Not sure if RTs are accepted any longer — doesn't look that way.

Soooo glad I got in EC when I did before all of the new changes. Cant wait till im done.

Specializes in dialysis.

This is pretty cool!!i currently and mostly have worked in dialysis and I am currently looking for a PRN gig in a more acute setting so I can get a refresher on some of my skills!! I recently applied to an LTACH, had an interview and I was honestl about not having experience about certain things but I am so willing to learn! Anyhow I believe this is a great change for excelsior and people won't look at it as an easy way to RN....this sure isn't a stroll in the park!

Hi

Not sure where to post this.

I am an excelsior graduate and was lucky enough to have done my CPNE before this madness of year long wait times.

My wife is currently waiting for her CPNE test date. She had all her paper work accepted on Feb 6 2016. Its now June 9th 2016. She called today and was told it would be 6-8 months BEFORE SHE EVEN GETS A DATE and then the date is 3-4 months after THAT so a total or a year wait time. Then if she fails the CPNE ANOTHER YEAR. So someone that needed to test a third time could potentially wait 3 years? I can't believe with all the federal regulations that this is legal!

My question is this....are there any Nursing schools that would take excelsior credits? It may be cheaper in the long run to just do that ans skip the foolishness with Excelsior.

No, other schools will not accept EC nursing classes — but this is not because it's Excelsior, just because it typically doesn't happen.

Have your wife check her EC inbox — apparently a message was sent about this issue. If people choose all sites and call for cancelation dates, they are going far sooner. I have seen some as short as a few weeks (not kidding) to 5 months. The goal, according to the message from EC, is four months.

What "federal regulations" govern the CPNE wait time? How is this breaking any laws? I know you're frustrated, I get it, but that just makes no sense.

Just took the TEAS this morning. Easy test. Scored in the 97th percentile with only about 8 hours of a study/prep time. However, I do have 4 years of of full-time coursework from The University of Texas at Austin under my belt and I did draw a little on that. Do recommend getting an exam content guide so you know what you will be tested on, as it's fairly broad. Easiest section was mathematics. Science is mostly biology-based with some light chemistry - primarily atomic bonding and basic chemical reactions. A couple of of the English / Reading questions we're really bizarre. Exam length was 150 questions and took about 2 hours to complete. If you can't pass this test, you probably really don't need to be in nursing school - just my two cents.

Concerning the gentleman above describing the potential year-and-a-half wait time for the CPNE... what the heck is up what that!? The administration should be doing WHATEVER it takes to contract new clinical sites and alleviate the the waitlist. What a disservice to their students. So, $2,000+ (plus airfare, lodging) and a 15 months wait just to make a single attempt? That is absolutely unacceptable and probably means Excelsior won't be getting a dime out of me, I'll take me TEAS score to a program elsewhere. Really disappointed.

EDIT: Just saw Pixie.RN's reply. Man, but calling for those last minute cancellations -- those airlines are really going to eat some people's lunch with those last-minute bookings. But, I do have a bazillion miles on my credit card so I'll at least give Excelsior a call to see what they're doing to rectify the issue before I jump ship.

Honestly, most people seem to be waiting about 7 to 9 months if they are not calling for cancelation dates. I drove to my CPNE in 2008, it was like 6 hours from home, I didn't want to fly to my CPNE. My wait time then was 7 months. Cancelation dates aren't for everyone, some people cannot go without notice, but I have seen people wait as short as 3 to 5 months recently because they called 3x daily for cancelations.

Discouraged about Excelsior - just finishing up pre-reqs but have 9 other L's I work with who have failed the CPNE. All coming back saying they felt set up to fail with staff having attitude that "everyone usually fails on their first try". So I'm doing a gut check now - glad I haven't gone to far who even in the short time I've been in I see the prices rise and rise for tests - now Pearson Vue charging but Excelsior not dropping the included test price - little things. I remember first signing and paying the initial $100 bucks for review of all my academic courses - and then everyday emails and phone calls from Excelsior until I officially signed and sent the $1100 - then silence....again a gut check now is what I'm going thru...I would like positive feedback saying what a great program and what I truly need to do to pass the CPNE..I'm finding out that Excelsior is more a business than a school - because clinicals are not "teaching"...Well what say you - I'd rather not hear from Excelsior college obviously but others who may or not feel like I do now that our eyes are open - thanks

I did reseach before I enrolled so I knew the costs up front, still cheaper than regular college. And here the wait to get into a program is 2 years minimum and then 2 years full time school. At least this way I can still work and get my degree. And they tell you the average wait time up front its not a secret. So even with the wait, if I stick to it I can be done by the time I would finally get accepted to a regular program and be 20000 less indebted. And what school isnt a business???? If you study and practice for the clinical you will pass it. I seen posts of people who didnt pass that was for things they should have known like not id the patient or washing their hands. From my understanding the clinical tasks are all basic nursing skills that any nurse should already know how to do its just doing it the proper way. And excelsior is a nln center for excellence none of the schools in my area are.

I think I heard about this school..You go at your own pace and you have to pay to take the exams? I'm a nursing student and will be finished in February. I would like to find an RN program after finding a job.
