Excelsior can take you places ... AKA, why it's all worth it

Published

EC can lead you to some places you might never expect! Here's my timeline ...

2003: Associates degree in Emergency Management Technology (paramedic), NREMT-P

2008: EC ADN

2010: BSN, Chamberlain College

And ...

2011: Army Nurse Corps!

Yep, that's right ... I've been given the honor of being selected for active duty in the Army Nurse Corps. It's very competitive right now, with fewer nurses getting out of the military and more seeking to enter. I started working on this in January, getting paperwork together, in preparation for the one selection board for this fiscal year, which occurred in November. Out of 300+ applicants, about 50 were selected, nationwide, for the Army Nurse Corps. And I'm one of them! So awesome. :)

So hang in there, distance learning peeps ... this is all worth it!!

Holy smokes you did it chica !! I am soooo proud of you. It has been a long time in the making but you pulled it off. Can I salute you if I am not in the service ? :)

Congratulations Lisa! Your one of the best!

:ancong!:

I graduated from Excelsior in 2009. If you ever helped out answering questions on the EPN, then I'm sure you helped me! Thank you!!

pankcakes- you DO NOT have to transfer custody of your kids, do not let them every tell you that! You Do have to have a family plan of who will CARE for your kids while you are on the ship, or deployed that is ALL! Just so you know, cause some single women with kids think they can't go in unless they give up their kids, but that' s just not true! I live next door to a single mom with 4 kids and her mom is on the Family Care Plan that should she get deployed or go to training etc her mother is the person who will take care of the kids until she comes back, and she gives her mom power of attornery to take care of any medical issue should they arise with the children and to enroll them in school etc...=)

100% accurate. One would be required to have a family care plan, which doesn't even have to be the non custodial parent. When the service member is deployed, generally the designated care taker under the care plan will receive the service member's housing allowance (if things haven't changed).

All should keep in mind that in today's business and legal climate a power of attorney is not the powerful instrument that it once was; many banks, institutions, etc., no longer accept a POA, so it is paramount that the service member really has his or her ducks in a row.

Congratulations to the OP for joining the ranks!

congrats lisa!!!! yay!!!!

Thanks guys, I did not know that! I was under the impression that custody had to be transferred to be active duty. Does the same thing apply to those who are married ? Or, perhaps, separated? Thanks. I guess I am wondering if the spouse can fight for custody while your out on a ship. Love my kids more than anything, don't want any hostile take over due to going in military...But, it would be great for me and my kids if I could go in financially as long as I keep custody.. thanks.

Well LTee congratulations on your commission.

Couple of things, you might want to think about.

1. Your first salute from an enlisted person according to tradition you should pay them a dollar, a silver dollar, not a token but a real one.

2. Go to EBay and buy yourself a poncho liner.

3. During Night LandNav take the route over the hill, they never ambush up there, walk to the road and turn left.

4. When they ask you which field would make a better LZ, the small field will be the answer they are looking for.

5. Good luck to you .
