I was just reading about nursing on aboutmyjob.com and it seems that everyone hates to be a nurse and that it is a horrible profession, etc. etc. About 99% of the posts were very negative.
As a nursing student, this gives me the willies.
Is it really that bad or do most people like it? The one thing that I noticed was most of the people had been a RN for 10+ years and had not specialized. Does getting an MSN or specializing help?
Thanks,

It's probably scarey for nursing students to come to nursing sites and listen to nurses vent about their jobs.
No EVERYONE does not HATE their jobs. Those are strong words "hate" and "everyone". Job satisfaction is lower than other fields, it's very stressful and there are lots of problems.
Think carefully before going into nursing yes. But does everyone hate nursing. No.

I know that nursing is a very stressful profession, and a lot of times out of that stress and anger comes the vents and complaints and the 'I hate my job' moments, but I think that deep down it is only that.. vents. I, for one, love my job.. even though I can get on here and complain about bad days and stupid stuff, I really do love it. I just know that others reading it can relate, so it makes it a better venting hole, so to speak. If you go home and try to talk to your family, you usually get a blank stare or a 'Thats nice, honey' but they don't always know what you are trying to say so it frustrates you. To have people who laugh when you talk about a situation or another at work is refreshing.
To make another point.. how many people do you know that absolutely love thier job? Not many, I'm sure.. but it's a fact of life, I suppose. JMHO

My initial inclination is to answer yes that is why we are all nurses. When I was a student and I came to this board there were long periods I spent away from the board as they seemed so negative. I did not realize it but even as a student I was still on the outside looking in. I did not understand where everyone was comming from.
I was once married to a cop who complained bitterly all the time about his job. I did not understand why he did not quit as it seemed he hated it. He thought I was nuts as he loved it.
Like the previous poster said. We need to talk with those who can understand. It is a poloicy in my house I don't bring my work home. If I did my spouse would not understand. When I do bring it home there are always misunderstandings and it causes problems later on.
It is a healthy way of blowing off steam. As nurses we see sides of life and human behavior that mere mortals (oops I forgot only doctors can refer to others as mere mortals:chuckle )that the ordinary person can't even imagine and would not want to. It is an asault on out sensibilities, our emoations, our egos, our very being. It takes another nurse to listen.
It is nothing more than shop talk. Every profession does it. It is just that in nursing we see and experrience a side of life most people would not care to.

Put another tally mark up for the "i love my job" category.
I love what I do, 98% of the time. Its the understaffing, lack of respect, stressed to the max, uncooperative coworkers, unorganized managers and lack of time to regroup that I hate.
I love nursing, I love the theory, and action, and making a difference to someone on some level on a daily basis, but I think it is like most any other profession. You will have bad days, you will want to quit, you will want to cry... but take a step back, a day off, a "you" moment, regroup and go back out there, because we have one of the most rewarding jobs in the world...
and when we retire, we can be non-stressed wal-mart door greeters :) Thats something to look forward to on really bad days :)

One reason it seems everyone is negative is that when someone is unhappy, they are going to chirp about it louder. Someone that is happy in their situation is going to be just that ... happy. They will just quietly go about life, fully enjoying it, not looking for validation or others that are in negative situation. That is why it probably seems overwhelmingly negative. The boards all seem negative, but the vast majority of friends I have in the field absolutely love it.

I'm still a student, too (currently doing pregrad or preceptorship). There are a lot of negative posts to be found, for sure. But, it isn't because "everyone" hates their nursing job. It's unfortunate, but a part of human nature, to be quite vocal when things are going badly but keep silent when things are going great. It's the same with every profession. We, as human beings in general, don't need advice or sympathy or understanding when things are going great and everything is peachy keen. We do need advice, sympathy, or understanding when things aren't going that great. Being a nurse is no different. This forum is a positive thing - it helps nurses and nursing students to seek and receive understanding from the only other people who CAN understand - other nurses and nursing students. And, I haven't found a single thread that did not contain some positives - usually the OP states the problem, situation, whatever, and the other members give advice, share experiences, or commiserate with the OP. All of those responses are a positive because it helps the OP to resolve the problem, or at least to understand that they are not alone.
Just remember when you are reading that if it seems like everything about nursing is negative, that for every one negative post, there are a hundred positive posts that haven't been made because advice isn't needed when things are going well.

Someone posted that if you are going into nursing for the wrong reasons you will hate your job.I can't remember who posted this(sorry!),but that seems to be true.I left nursing suddenly about 3 years ago for a break;burned out in ICU.I took 3 weeks off and did nothing at all.I went back to bartending for 6 months as that was how i had put myself through nursing school. and didn't know what else to do.After 6 months of that ,nursing wasn't so bad after all.everyone thought i had lost my nursing license or i was in trouble or something exteme to leave my job in nursing.i needed to take a break.Find something you like to do in nursing. There are a million places to work in nursing and a lot of specialties.

I knew a nurse many yrs. ago who would take a break from nursing every couple of yrs. and do something else. It was her way of keeping herself from getting that "burn-out". She would come back to nursing after 6 months renewed.

I love what I do...when you're responsible for someones health and wellbeing.....it's always stressful.....there are days when I want to bang my head on the wall but what other job gives so much satisfaction when you can heal someone and make them a full person again.....breaks are important....vacations are important...too bad people in management have forgotten that part...

Yes,I love what I do, nursing, caring for others.
Yes, sometimes I hate the unreasonable demands put on nurses. Who wouldn't?
