does everyone really hate nursing?

Published

I was just reading about nursing on aboutmyjob.com and it seems that everyone hates to be a nurse and that it is a horrible profession, etc. etc. About 99% of the posts were very negative.

As a nursing student, this gives me the willies.

Is it really that bad or do most people like it? The one thing that I noticed was most of the people had been a RN for 10+ years and had not specialized. Does getting an MSN or specializing help?

Thanks,

Yes, I actually "hate" my job. I loved it at first, but there is only so much buttwiping and glorified waitressing I can do. I need a break, and am going back to school to specialize. I think its real easy to get burnt out in nursing, you have to be real careful not to become a disgruntled old mean nurse, which im not, but i feel it coming on....therefore im changing directions. Nursing takes a lot of patience and dedication, definitely not respected enough.

No I don't think we as nurses hate our jobs, we just hate the way our profession has gone. We now do the work that years ago only the doc's did. We are made to work long hours, sometimes 16-20 in a 24 hour period. Mandatory is the word we all have come to hate. I work in an ICU and do 12 hr shifts. We are unionized thankfully and do not have to do 20 hrs. any more, but we do have to do 16. We truly need to get more nurses, I mean nation wide, not just where I work. This is my feelings. Sorry it was so long...Funky:)

I have nursed for over 8 years now and I certainly don't hate nursing, if I did I would leave. What I do hate is not always being able to give your best to the patients because of lack of funding, staff, etc. What I hate is when your the only qualified nurse on duty with 2 support assistants, trying to maintain 24 patients health and well-being and relatives are constantly telling you that, "Mary in the next bed is shouting for a nurse" Mary is confused and disorientated and constantly shouts for a nurse and I would dearly love to sit with her, reassure her and orientate her, but unfortunately Mr. Smith has chest pain, Mrs Jones has terrible back pain, Mrs Bloggs wants the toilet and can't get there without assistance and the bed manager is pressuring me to discharge or transfer patients as there are patients in A&E. Thats what I hate, not nursing but the inability at times to be able to do my job and nurse.

I, for one, hate the health care delivery system, and I hate watching people try to access care and not be able to do so.

And, what's even worse, is watching people who don't need the care...abuse it! :(

I love my job, it pays OK.. Just rub my feet for about 10mins when I get home. And listen to me rant about stuff for another 10 mins. Forget all that, let me take a nice long shower and I am a regular person again.

I work really hard, mentally, physically and emotionally. I take care of peoples lives. I try to take care of things they can no longer do for themselves or are trying to do again after injury.

I am a bit stressed after work and venting with co-workers is nice.

That is all I will explain as this is my job and I feel that I can vent at this site without offending those that are not already nurses.

WOOF! Have I really been at this for 16 yrs?!?

Absolutely don't hate nursing. But, there are things that go with the job that you need to learn to manage. And the one thing that I've learned all these years is to manage HOW I do nursing. Got totally burned out in one area, so had to change for a while. I can't imagine not being a nurse. LOL.... and a few years ago I would have rolled my eyes at that last statement! :chuckle Something about it.... just gets under the skin.
