Everest Institute LPN, is it worth it?

Published

I have completed my nursing pre-recs but they still tell me it is a 4-5 year wait. My question is, has anyone gone to everest Institute for LPN and passed the Nclex and been refused a job becasue they went to Everest? I have heard both pro and con about this school. I know it is expensive but with MI works, FAFSA and student loans I can make it finanacially. I just don't want to get stuck paying for a career where no one will hire me.

Do you have an idea of how much the program is? Why such a long wait for LPN, thats crazy. Were you going to Everest for pre-reqs? What area do you live in roughly?

I live in MI and the nursing school wait list is so long because of all the displaced auto workers. They got all their tuition paid by the state and were put first in line for the vocational programs at the local colleges. I did my pre-recs at a community college and I thought I could just slide into the nursing program but then they told us about the wait. My GPA is 3.9 so I didn't think it would be a problem getting into any nursing school in my area but all the local colleges have about the same wait time. The x-ray tech wait list is even longer. I just wondered if Everest Institute graduates had a hard time finding jobs becaue they did gratuate from Everest. There seems to be a stigma attached to going to Everest. I know the tuition is expensiveat Everest but at UDM I would have had to go to school for 4 years for the BSN program and even with financial aid it would cost an additional $9000 per year out of my own pocket. I don't want to stay in school for another 4 years and shell out $36,000. I just spent two years in college and a lot of money to get put on a waiting list.

mamma, did you get pre-approved for the NWLB money? I was so close. Last summer I was finishing up my pre-req that they wont pay for and then the funding got pulled. I was in MI works 2 years ago and jumped thru all their hoops only to be told they dont pay for pre-req. Now, I am doing it all on student loans even though I have no money, I cannot get grants because my husband income. (like he is going to pay off my student loans!)

If you had the pre-reqs you could have gotten into OCC. They have no wait list. I applied in Sept and got accepted in Oct, start next week!

Im sure Everest is a fine school but I know what you mean about a stigma. I would rather go to community college than a school like Baker , Everest, etc. I still have a few years left of college of if I get an RN. I just think of it like a job. Im not worrying anymore about how long it will take. The time will go by anyway and I will either work or go to school, I keep busy either way.

I bet if you apply to OCC you will get through school much faster for less money. The next program begins 1 year from now. Our classes are held at the Southfield campus. You have summer semester to complete any classes that may be different at OCC. Your GPA is really good, you would have made it in if you applied last Sept.

Anne, I think there is still money from MI works. I just got a letter in the mail last week telling me the amount of money I could get if I was still on unemployment. I go back to work tomorrow but then wil get laid off for the summer just before Memorial day. I would love to go to OCC but then I would have to move accross state.

Once you have your license, it doesn't matter so much where you went to school. I graduated from Everest 16 months after I first called them. I've been WORKING AS A NURSE for the past year and a half. If I'd stuck with the ADN program, I might be getting ready for my first actual nursing course right now...provided I survived the stress of my last job for that long.

Thank you so much for the information. What you said is exactly how I feel. I couldn't survive another few years of college.

I will be starting the Everest program in February. I am not worried much about the stigma seeing as though once I take and pass the test all that matters is that I am licensed to work. I am going to be working while in the program to gain more experience in the healthcare field and so that its easier for me to get a job (I work for a hospital as an MA now) I'm just hoping that I am able to handle working and the program. I took the part time route so it'll take me a little longer than others

What city are you in that you will be going to Everest? I am still on the fence as to whether I go part time or full time. Even though I hate my current job it is still money to live on.

I'll be at the Southfield campus

Everest was defiantly worth it. I graduated from EI on Dec 20,2010...took my boards in Jan 2011....had my Michigan licenced endorsed to another state ( I moved out of state the next day after graduation) and started working as a nurse Feb 21, 2011. The entire time I was at EI was one big mass of confusion. But I will say that in the end you will be ready to be a nurse. They teach you the basics and its up to you to take that, master it and be a nurse. Yes it was expensive (30,000 dollars) but I went to school for one 1 year, graudated, moved to another state and now I am working full time as a LPN. I am very happy I went to EI!!! Oh and by the way.....my graduating class had 42 people in it. Everyone has passed the NCLEX on the first time! Now that is mighty impressive. 75% of the class only had 85 questions on the NCLEX too.....and as you know thats the mininum number of questions you have to answer to prove that you are a safe nurse.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

How hard was the NCLEX? Do they offer strategies to help answer the questions in the class?
