Ever do a flu shot clinic?

I'm thinking about giving flu shots for a little extra income this fall and was wondering if anyone has any pointers or feedback on their experience. Thanks, Jules

i was just thinking of doing a flu shot clinic as i am in between jobs right now. i am not so sure if i want to anymore if all the are going to offer is $14/hr.

Sorry, I haven't been able to get on the net for a couple of days. I was hired by two separate Visiting Nurse Associations in NJ ~ 10 yrs ago to do their clinics. Yes, $20/hr was what we were paid.

On craigslist, I found an ad for flu shot nurses needed last week. I clicked on the link and sent the recruiter an email with my resume attached. The company is called testmed (http://www.testmed.com) They are in Cali,FL,Illinois,missouri,ohio and washington and other states ithink. I have an interview setup for friday.LPN and RN pay range from $22-35 per hour. They are hiring for Sept.25-Dec25th I believe. You can go and do flu shots in coperate offices 8am-4pm or 9-5pm on whatever days u want, the mall or other clinics sites.There are also 4hour days available. To search online at craigslist.com. click on your state, city then medical/health and put in Rn, or flu shot in the search box. You can also google testmed and an ad will come up from craigslist. Nursing agencies are also hiring for flu shots now.Hope this info helps.

I'm glad I found this out about the lower pay with Maxim. :nono: I just wrote them about needing a nurse here to administer flu shots. They e-mailed back and said they do need another nurse in my area. I need to go into their office. Hmmmm...I just might re-think this. With today's gas prices, I'm wondering how cost-effective it will be.

I feel bad, because in August I was hired to give flu shots through our local VNA for $22 an hour, but had to turn it down because my mother had a health scare. Turned out to be less serious than initially thought...but I hated to commit myself not knowing what was going on with her. The women I met at the VNA office were the nicest ladies, too! I hope that next year maybe they'll need more nurses. I met at least two retired nurses who have been setting up these clinics for years. Nice gals.

Who paid you $20 an hour? I did a flu shot clinic for Maxim a couple of years ago, and all they paid me was $14 an hour. No mileage, and I drove 140 miles EACH WAY to the Costco where they had it. When they called me the next year, I told them I would only do it as an independant contractor, not an employee at a much higher salary. Of course, they did not to go for that. When they called me again, the next year, I told them the same thing. When they refused again, I told them that they must not need nurses that badly for these clinics. I guess that they find enough suckers who are willing to sell their professional services for HS dropout wages.

How hard or easy is it to set up a clinic yourself? I realize that like anything, it just takes doing it a couple times and it will be like old hat. :) But, has anyone ever had a problem with the clerk not showing up? I've been out of the workforce for awhile, so I'm just a wee bit nervous about being responsible for setting up. I almost wish I was just there with other nurses, as well. The way the VNA works it is if you give flu shots for 2 hours, they pay you for 3 (½ set up and tear down). Or whatever the amount of hours you work, they add an hour of pay to that. If you have to drive to their office to pick up the vaccines from their frig. they pay mileage (I think if it's the day before). And, I believe to the site. But I'm not too sure about that.

Oh well! Next year, maybe. :) And, I know I would quickly catch on and it would become a quick routine, I'm sure.

My educated guess, is that in a couple of years, they will have Medical Assistants administer the shots, (don't they give shots in physician's offices?), and one physician will oversee the clinic. Of course this will occurr in a Walmart. Then they can offer to pay only $10 an hour. Stand by for the next round of de- skilling of licensed, professional nursing care. JMHO, and my NY $0.02.

I just got hired with Maxim to do flu shot clinics. Still debating if it will be worth it. They pay $15/hr and you are required to go to their office to pick up the supplies, arrive at the site 1 one prior to start, then return supplies/money to the office. And they will only pay you from the 1 hour prior to start of clinic until the end of scheduled clinic. They do not pay any type of travel time or mileage.

I will hopefully be starting nursing school in January, so please forgive this question, but why do they give flu shots into your shoulder joint? (what it feels like, anyway). Why can't it just go into the fleshy part of the arm?

I just spoke with a friend of mine who owns an agency for RNs. She said she was asked by a company (sorry, I forgot the name) to provide nurses to administer the flu shots. She pays her nurses $40/hr. In return, the company pays her $56/hr/nurse.

Ok, enough questions and answers regarding salary...my question has to do with protocol. Can someone give me a list of "must-haves" besides the vaccine, needles and syringes?

Doctor's order

Consent (would someone give me a template..."are you allergic to eggs?" questions, etc.)

Gloves

Sharps container

Hand sanitizer

In case there's a reaction...Benadryl, Epinephrine, Ammonium Sulfate (?)

What about a cooler to keep the vaccine in a cold place/refrigerated?

Also, can you pre-draw the vaccines if you anticipate giving shots to a mass of patients?

What else am I missing or would I need?

I would appreciate any tips or help. Thank you!

No question asked is a dumb question Jules....VNA=visiting nurse association. Back home they do home health and community health.
