What's the typical pay like in the ER or Trauma Unit for a person who just started in the ER compared to a more experienced ER nurse???

Sorry, as a part-time staff ER nurse with 7 years with the facility, in Cleveland, I make 26.98/hr. What the deal is with the other 2 cents - no one can answer. As an agency with this experience, and of course ACLS, PALS, BLS, I make 39/hr weekday 1st shift. If I haven't had enough of the abuse for one week and I pick up a weekend night shift through agency, I make 45/hr. The deal gets really sweet with weekend, night shift on a holiday - then it's 63/hr. For example, I since this past Christmas and New Year's fell on the weekends - I worked night shift 12/23 11p-7a and got the higher rate of 63/hr. Hope this helps. Cathy, RN, BSN, Cleveland
As in 45 DOLLARS??!!!
As in 63 DOLLARS AN HOUR!!!!!!!!!?? HOLY MOLY! This is Cleveland??
I need to move there. Forget Florida!

Thanks everyone for replying!! very much appreciated :)
Reading most of responses is very depressing though. I didn't know salaries could be so low especially in such an area like the emergency room.
Nurses absolutely deserve more money considering that the lives of patients are in our hands. Don't you think thats a big responsibility? Dont you think we deserve not only verbal recognition but also monetary recognition for all the hard work we do? I think the majority of the RN population feels they deserve more money, so when will there be a change? Do you think it's possible for all of us to come together and make a change?
My sister started making 18 or 20 per hour in her first year as an RN. That was over 13 yrs ago. Some of the numbers im reading are still around the same ballpark.
Starting salaries should increase everywhere.
Maybe Im being overly ambitious here or maybe I still have more to learn about how the world works. But those are just my thoughts at the moment. And please dont tell me that its not about the money, nursing is about caring. I already know what nursing is about, that is why I chose to be one. I love taking care of people, I love science. I also love being financially sound thank you very much.
Ugh, as i'm making the transition from student to working adult I am finding the real world to be more stressful than school!
Please don't bite my head off for this post. they're just my opinions! which will probably change in the next 2 yrs again

I did research on different nursing salaries in maryland and ER nursing is the 3rd lowest paying specialty along with psych in Maryland.
Here is what I found from http://swz.salary.com/
Average nurse in my area makes: 60k
Surgical First Assistant: 71k
Research Nurse: 64k
OR Nurse: 62k
Recovery Room: 61k
Renal: 61k
Oncology: 59k
CCU: 59k
Obstetrics: 58k
ER: 57k
Psych: 57k
ICU: 56k
Geriatric: 52k
The average ER NP makes 81k; average head nurse in the ER makes 82k.
I still want to know what most of you say when you ask for more money lol! I need to learn how to do that.
Hi Nutmeg, thanks for replying! I have no idea and was wondering the same thing actually. Maybe an interview expert would have a good answer. I'm guessing not to be too assertive but be confident.

Absolutely we should make more money, much more. The hospitals run on our backs, always have. As the nursing "shortage" has bloomed, nursing salaries have remained stagnant, thereby increasing the "shortage." (In my view, nurses have fled from the backbreaking, heartrending, thankless work in such droves because of higher salaries out of hospitals.) We will never make what we are worth until we stand up together and demand it.

" i am excited to work at your facility. i am certain i could be quite productive here. your (fill in) department looks very exciting and the nurses seems to work well and management seems progressive. however, i did interview at another hospital and they made a very attractive offer that included a sign on bonus. this has made my decision harder. is there any room to recalculate your offer?"
plus: if you were a cna/emt etc make sure you mention that health care experience!

now you know why there's a 'shortage of nurses!'
BUT
there are 2.3 million rns in the us.
where are they?
NOT at the bedside- because it really doesn't pay to stay there.

In the San Francisco area, in our ER, new grads start out at $35.80/hour. ER nurses with 8 years of experience make about $44.60/hour. I've done some research and in this part of California, the salaries for nurses are one of the highest. I'm not sure if it's due to a higher cost of living....

Yeah. I did that once and it worked, but I always get really nervous. The interview itself is not hard for me, but once it comes time for me to ask about money the stuttering and knee buckling starts. LOL I always expect them to say. What the heck! I can't believe you asked that! Nevermind we aren't hiring!

We don't hire new grads anywhere in the hospital, all nurses must have at least 2 years experience. Currency conversion makes the starting wage about $19.00/hr for the ED nurses...........but the bonus is............TAX FREE & Housing included.
