Entering Nursing School

Published

I've gone back to school, and I'm 45. I was going to school to be a Rad Tech, but apparently there are no job's in that market, and it doesn't look like this will change for a while. I've always' loved to go into nursing, and now I have a chance. Do you think my age will effect my getting a job down the road. I still have 2 year's of nursing school to go, and that's if I can get into a nursing school. My GPA is 3.5. Thank you very much for your feedback. I really appreciate anything anyone can tell me. :)

I do not want to be negative butttt I graduated last December and I had to move to a state that was 700 miles away from my family and friends for a nursing job. I am happy for you CW1978 that you haven't even graduated yet and you already have job offers but that is just not the reality for hundreds of new grads. In fact I am moving back home without a job because hospitals are still asking for years of experience and I only have 10 months experience on a surgical intermediate floor with cardiac monitoring and all. Like I said..it's not negativity it is just honesty and I wish someone would have told me while I was in school that there is no job security...period.

No job security? seriously? See, this is what I was talking about in the first place. If you really have things to work for, like family, or mortgage, whatever it may be....nursing will always bring you job security. Please don't listen to the last reply! Like I said I graduate in 11 WEEKS!!!!!!! WOO HOO! And I live in an area where there are 9 nursing schools...but the fact is, there are still job openings! So be the maker of your own destiny, and get yourself known! I make it a point to introduce myself to ALL nurse managers, nurses, pcts, cna's, etc....when at my clinical sites. I don't care where I am, or what floor I'm on, because I realize that when I graduate I'll have to take what is available at the time. And yes, I do plan on taking a job in my area. Even though the largest hospital, with 9,000 employees only has 23 postings for jobs. The way I see it is that I have to be more known and more credible, and better prepared than the other 9 million people applying for my job. Really, don't listen to that last post, that's someone who has been beaten down. Really. No job security? Since when have people STOPPED getting sick? Honestly, I feel sorry for whoever wrote that last post, because quite honestly, someone like ME will TAKE YOUR JOB. I have much more than myself to work for. My wife, my future kids, my retirement, my enjoyment of life. If you're already down because you can't get a job in nursing, maybe a more positive outlook on your own life will help you realize why you're really doing it. There are plenty of nursing jobs available. And BOO HOO if you have to move, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Seriously. Grow up and accept the facts of life. Sometimes you just have to do what it takes, especially in todays economy. If I had to move TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY I WOULD! Why? Because that's what it takes. You need to look deep down, and ask yourself if you are willing to go to ANY end to make your dreams come true. If you are, then nursing will reward you in ways you never dreamed of. If not, like the last poster, you will become negative in a couple of days. Get over things poster. Sometimes you have to sacrifice what YOU want for what is better in the long run. So what if you have to take a job away from where you were born and raised.....get 2-3 years experience, and MOVE BACK! That's the joy of nursing! Get your degree, and don't listen to those that would have you believe that nursing is horrible. They're the ones that make up the 20% of new grads that leave the field in the 1st year! No job is ideal. But if it's what you truly dream of and desire, it will reward you more than you'll ever realize. Please don't listen to these people that say how bad it is, because believe me, they're the people that will be in the unemployment line in the next 6 months.

Thanks for the post jljkhorton, I knew there were positive people out there like me :)

PERIOD!!!! I have NO experience, the only thing I have is that type of personality that make the last poster hate people like me. Really, whine because you had to move? I moved to a different state, 1000 miles away from my hometown, got into nursing school, love it, and plan on taking the jobs of people like you. Seriously. You went to school to be a nurse. If you couldn't accept the fact that you may possibly have to take some kind of sacrifice to make that happen, you should have just gone to business school. Be a nurse, make a difference, make people better than they were when they met you. Be SOMEONE. Don't let people like this last poster get you down. You have the power to make a difference. Be the kind of nurse that the last poster can never be. Yeah, it sucks sometimes, but that's why you do it, cause you are willing to make the sacrifices. You see beyond you. Yeah, maybe this all sounds ideal. But that's my take on all this. I'm 31 years old. I'm not a 21 year old kid with no life experience in this. I've tried my hands at many things. And believe me, you will NEVER impact a persons life until you are their caregiver. So make yourself better than those who want to bring you down. Do what is right for you. There are plenty of jobs available, and even in YOUR area. You just need to decide whether this is good for you, or for those you plan on caring for!

I graduate with at LEAST 2000 others. And yeah, I'm gonna have a job by the end of June. Why? Certainly not because there are only 25 jobs available. But because I make myself the best of the best. I'm number 1 out of those 25. Doubt me? I don't! That's what it takes to get a job. No matter if you're looking to be a manager at Burger King or Wal-Mart. Get over yourself. Sometimes you gotta do the garbage work. And CLIMB up a ladder. I'm actually glad there are lazier people than me in the world. I may not bet the smartest guy on earth, but I'll bet my life I'll work harder than you when I need to!!!

Go to school, be a NURSE! Make a difference in someone life! I promise you they WILL make a difference in yours!

Yeah, yeah, i'm still a student, have my ideal view of the world, but believe me, I've lived in it long enough to know that if I want it better, I HAVE TO MAKE IT THAT WAY!

Thank you so much for all your feedback. I appreciate it very much. I have to just move onward and upward and make my dream of nursing come true. You have no idea how much these comment's have helped me. I appreciate all of them.

I'm going for it. I appreciate everything, and you have know idea how much. Thank you. I'll do whatever it take's to finish, and make my dream's come true. Sounds corney, but I am. Thank's

So you are saying that the reason why hundreds of new nurses don't have jobs is because they aren't trying hard enough? You are very arrogant and have no clue what youre talking about. Why dont you wait until you're actually a nurse WORKING before you start making rude comments about others.

Whoa there!!!

Let's get back on track here: helping the OP to decide if nursing is for them.

As to the job market for nurses currently, its tight most places.

Will it be that way in 2 years? Who knows.

But of course, I'm a student. Clueless about real life. And you're the working nurse, who knows all. Hope we get to work together some day! And it's probably more like thousands of new grads without work. Just like most fields right now.
