Energetic after your shift.

Anyone else feel crazy energetic after work? Man lately I just feel pumped. Maybe it's because I'm 23? Not sure but it's like during work I can feel the fatigue and tiredness. But when I clock out since I'm not doing anything stimulating anymore, it's like all that adrenaline cannot cancel out anymore. I've been doing lots of running and have recently began to challenge my time/distance.

Especially when I get those crazy cases. For example I had a patient on IABP, ventilated, CRRT 1:1 titrating the UF, and talks about starting ECMO. Patient had over 10 drips! Just gets me all excited and pumped. I'm honored I'm getting these hard patients.

Maybe I leave pumped because I genuinely somehow enjoy my job and somehow I'm a masochist/ICU nerd to the MAX!!!

Rock on CardiacDork. I envy your youth... and if I ever need a critical care nurse, I hope it is someone like you.

You have the experience ;)

Nursing at its best is when the youthful new nurses and the experienced mature nurses can really come together and promote the profession with their respective strengths.

I am a 22 year old CVICU nurse but I don't usually feel energetic after a shift. I mean, I don't mind going to breakfast and staying up a couple hours, but I'm not inspired to go lift or anything like I wish I were. :p

Yep.. in a perfect world. However, there would be far fewer posts on AN.

Yes, after a good shift at work, where I feel I made a difference, or did a really good job, I drive home "pumped" and with the music ALLLL the way up. Sometimes, I have to take a walk or go to the gym to expend this energy.

I am a LOT older than you, however, and see it as a very good thing that I can still get this pumped and excited in a day of nursing.

Same. After a day of having a patient on a bunch of drips and managing it and feeling competent. I feel accomplished and elated. I put the music up and drive home feeling fulfilled. Whatever the outcome was. Knowing I managed what I managed, is a big confidence booster and I gotta victory dance en route home.
