I was wondering if anyone has prior experience as an EMT and if it would be beneficial to nursing school? I was thinking about taking EMT course while waiting to get into nursing school. And, to maybe get a little income coming in. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

I think it helped me. It can definitely get you some exposure to at least a couple of areas of healthcare. Pay for a basic EMT can vary greatly from service to service (some are still volunteer), but it will bring in some spending money on the side for you.

I was thinking the same thing, if I don't get accepted at our ADN program I'll try that route....I see the EMT students in the library all the time. Looks tough, too.

I've been a ski patroller since '97 and an EMT since '99. Started nursing school last August. The knowledge and experience definitely has helped. I had a good foundation in A&P, assessment, common drugs, patient interaction and working with others in the medical community. Codes are different in the hospital too, lotsa elbow room instead of a dark narrow hallway.
The Basic EMT program is only 3 months and is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier than nursing school. Pay is low, but you get to meet some interesting people in some interesting situations.
Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. I believe I will go ahead and do it. The one I am looking at is an 8 week course starting around mid June.
Thanks again
