Employee Motivation

Hello All,

I am the Staff Educator for a privately owned skilled nursing and rehab facility. We currently use Relias Learning Modules for staff education. I am having a difficult time getting my employees to engage and complete the module on time. For the past two months, rate of incomplete education has ranged from 9-18% of my staff, with average of 144 employees. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage staff to complete education?

Thanks,

Tie raises to the learning modules -- not complete, not eligible for a raise.

Tie disciplinary process to the learning modules. If the modules aren't complete on time, issue a verbal warning.

Great question! We have the same issue but with a much smaller facility. Couple questions for you. Do you have computer access for your staff to complete the modules at work? Do you set aside time for them to complete them while at work? Do you pay them to do the training? How do you let staff know what is due and when?

We have limited computers access at work. The internet seems to be spotty or maybe it is the actual computers that freeze up. It is horrible! We don't have an SDC right now so no one is really in charge. I was filling in for a short period of time, so I have a little bit more access to the relias site. With the 6/30 deadline, I was able to get a few of the modules printed out so that staff could complete them and do a paper test. This helped.

With this last round, I believe the DON was giving verbal warnings (not sure if it happened) but there was no deadline for late education to be completed.

Raises based on performance, hahahah. We are a union facility so they are guaranteed raises.

Seriously, your facility refused to update your education and status? Time to enroll in a reasonable educational system.

I worked in a building that used Relias. It's not a very good program. In the first few classes I looked at, I found several mistakes. It's all just part of the companies trying to cut down on nursing staff. Sure, you can sit in front of a computer and watch videos about dementia training, but that doesn't really take the place of an experienced person teaching the class. It's not just about getting the classes done. It should be about the actual need for the information and making sure that the employees understand what they are learning.

I also have found Relias not user friendly. It took longer figuring out what was due and how use the program, than on the training itself. Also make sure staff has the time to actually do the training. It's not fair to tell staff to find time while on the floor to get the training done. Make sure staff has relief covering their duties for a bit so they can focus on completing the training.
