EMORY MSN FNP 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello, I wanted to start a thread to see if anybody has heard from Emory's early admission round to the MSN FNP part-time 2020 program. The release date was set for Aug 16th and I haven't heard anything yet, making tomorrow almost 2 months late. When I reach out I am told it will be a couple more weeks with no other information and it has been about a month since the last time I reached out. I wanted to see if anybody else was in the same position? Thank you for any information provided.

@Mharris19 oh gotcha! I haven't been checking any other posts so I'm not sure what's happening. Well I hope they'll still send notifications! I applied to the FNP program as well!!

You can hear later. I wasn’t notified until like 6PM when I was admitted for my ABSN at Emory. They also let everyone know if you’re waitlisted, admitted, or rejected. You will hear something.

Hi! I got into the FNP program, I got an email to check my status at 2 pm. Can I ask what everyone's nursing career experience has been like prior to applying?

I was a direct-entry licensed midwife before going to nursing school so my experience is primarily in home and birth center settings. I applied for the CNM program. I just graduated with my BSN and will soon be working my first nursing job with medically fragile children in their homes.

@Mharris19 have you heard anything back yet? I'm still waiting ?

@Mharris19 me neither ? Kind of disappointed because even if I didn't get in it would've been nice to at least receive a notification by now so that I don't just sit here all night in anticipation.

@sibinatto I was admitted for a post-masters cert. in nurse-midwifery. I have been a bachelor's prepared nurse for over six years. My work experience is all hospital based - 3 years of med-surg and another 3 years of high-risk OB/GYN at a trauma center. My OB/GYN job includes charge nurse and unit preceptor duties, including both new RN hires and BSN students from our state university. I finished an MSN at the end of 2018 and recently certified as an FNP. How about you?

@Emineminem hi! Thank you for your reply. I ask because I’m currently finishing my BSN and FNP is my long term goal so I am torn between going straight into a masters program out of BSN or getting a few years of RN experience first. I see pros and cons to both options. If anyone has thoughts on this feel free to chime in here or PM me so we don’t clog this feed haha. Thank you

@sibinatto I worked for ~ 2 years in Med-Surg before starting my FNP degree. I attended part-time, so I was able to continue to work during the program. I am not a huge fan of the rhetoric that nurses need to practice for a certain length of time, or in a particular setting, prior to pursuing APRN education. Keep in mind - there are 20 something year old doctors all over the country entering residency programs and literally practicing medicine. The FNP role is different from that of a bedside nurse. If FNP is the role you are most interested in or will be the happiest in, go for it!

That being said, having some actual nursing experience prior to becoming a NP certainly won't hurt you (if that's what you decide). You will need a strong understanding of pathophysiology, and of both acute and chronic disease processes in order to function effectively as an FNP. I think it's a matter of how comfortable you personally feel in moving forward to the NP role at this time. Emory, however, would be a great opportunity for many reasons - the quality of your education and clinical experiences, the university's academic community, etc. I would definitely consider it! ?
