Emory Nursing Students!!!!
Hey everyone,
I have applied to the NHWSoN begining Fall 2010. I submited my application packet the first week of September. I am already CrAzY with anxiety. When did you folks here that you were accepted. How soon after you applied?
I met with an advisor last month and she said I should have no problem getting in. I am an Emory employee. I have been a Nurse Tech for ten years (not all at Emory). The 3 letters of recommendation were from: my A&P teacher, another teacher of health sciences, and my boss who is MSN, RN, FNP-C.
I have always wanted to be an Emory Nurse!!!!! Hopefully my dream will come true soon!!!!
Please let me know when you applied to the program and when you got your accpt. letter........jasonwalkeratl
Hello,
Alright so you want to know about the NEAT? What I can tell you is that around maybe 7-10 people go it. We only had one Woodruff winner. The NEAT is basically broken up into semesters to equal a grand total of around 30K. This means that each semester they give you around 8,300-8,500 towards tuition. This also means that you will still need other money to cover the rest of the tuition as well as items needed. For four semesters of this money you will owe the Emory system 2 years of service. If you do not get it(NEAT) the first year....You are in luck because you can apply the next year. For one year of tuition you owe one year of service(I believe). The CHANCES scholarship from CHOA (Children Health Care of Atlanta) is three years of service for payment of school. The CHOA application was due in May last year. Go on their website and check it out. Now here is the kicker!! When you go to work for these hospitals after recieving this money it is added onto your paycheck as earned income. Basically you look like you are earning more money then you actually are because the school "money" is added to your check. This is going to put you in a higher tax bracket but only for two years. I just wanted you to be aware of how these things work. It's really not all that bad because your taxes may be high for one year or two years. Check to see which way they want you to send in your application. I believe last year they asked us to upload it? Or there maybe an address on the application? There should be some directions on where it is suppose to go/proper way to submit so recheck the website for that.
Hello,
When it comes to financial aid...Everyone is different. Financial aid is based on the past year's income. The problem with that is you may have worked last year and now like everybody else in your class you will not be working while in school and if you do(work) it's not even close to what you were making before. Most people that worked only did 2 hour here or 3 hours there during the first semester. FASA does not take this decrease in work into consideration. So when you ask about balance that all depends on the taxes. This is an individual situation. The only way your are going to know this is when they put your financial awards up on OPUS. When this happens...???... is again an individual basis. Some people get this information earlier than others depending on when they applied for the aid. It would be fair to say that most people that filed by the school dead line had a good indication of where they were money wise by June. Emory will provide information on how to take out private loans. They have a pretty good relationship with lenders and when you go to apply you will do it through Emory online. They like for us to work with lenders that they have checked out. All of this information you will get later. There are academic scholarships and need-based scholarships. Need-based has to do with W2s and any other information they ask for.
Hi Nazifa...Good luck with the NEAT. Financial aid pretty much works like this (or at least it has everytime I had to deal with it). The school will calculate an estimated annual cost for a student to attend, now this should include books, housing, transportation, etc. They'll take that number and subtract your efc and other aid you may be receiving. Whatever the final product is will be the amount that you either a. need to come up with or b. borrow. The good news is that there are subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loans bad news is that I think the max. you can get is 15,000 a year between the two of them. If you've covered that estimated amount then your set, if not and you've used all the possible fin. aid resources available to you, you'll need to apply for a personal loan and those, lacking a better word- just suck. If you find yourself applying for a stafford loan don't stress it-they're super easy. The fin. aid office usually takes care of the paper work, all you have to do is read and sign some forms(they want to make sure you understand that at some point you have to pay them back including the interest and some other blah, blah, blah) and maybe choose the bank you'll be borowing from. The bank will then issue a check each semester to the school, the school will then deposit that money into your school account and that is more or less how it works. These loans are super human friendly, by that I mean, you don't begin repayment until about six months after you graduate, if for what ever reason you loose your job you can defer payments for a certain period of time without it affecting your credit, or if you decide to get your masters the payments will be defered until you obtain that degree-although I'm not sure if the principle will continue to acquire interest but to be on the safe side I would say yes.
Personal loans are not that forgiving. The school may have a list of preferred lenders but you have to take it from there. You most likely need good credit or a co-signer. Hopefully you won't need to find out too much info on how these loans work cause you won't need to apply for them...right :)
Hope that helped and good luck!!!
There is a ton of info on the web regarding school loans if Emory's site does not ansewer all your questions.
Hello I also got into Emory fall 2010 program....:)and although I find it as a blessing its now also a burden because I do not know how I will be able to afford it at all...... and i depend on my hope scholarship. I know about the chance and neat scholarships and im applying for them but sure is everyone else and I know that those are really competitive. So i was wondering was there anyone out there who has gotten into emory who was able to fund their education without taking out huge student loans. Please help me cause this is scaring me away from going to the school I really want to go to...
I guess while we are on the topic of Financial Aid, my EFC was 10k. This concerns me. Does this mean that I have to cover 10K for the academic year? I'm an independent, pay for everything, and if I go to Emory will work almost nothing! I believe the estimated cost of attendance for Emory is right under 50k. Does this mean that somehow, someway, 40k must be accounted for? I've read many blogs, and it does make too much sense!
Your SAR report should give you an idea of what kind of federal aid to expect, if any. I'm basing this on how my fin. aid worked out for me this year. I'm currently at a c.c but I'm not working so i decided to apply for aid. I only qualified for a governors tuition wavier, keep in mind this a c.c where a unit costs around 20 bucks. I was mailed a letter with the "estimated cost of existing" while in school with my efc which was around a couple grand and that wavier deducted. For remaining amount I took out a goverment loan. To ansewer your question, I believe you'll have to cover your efc and hope and pray that they come up with some amazing grants for you. I guess the burden of getting accepted is the stress of having to figure out how to pay for that education. I'm in the same boat you are (support myself, independent), I think the only thing to do now is to just wait and see what kind of aid will be offered and take it from there.
Good luck and I hope you get good news!

I just realized it's past five on Friday...I was wondering if anyone knows to what office I should send the NEAT application?
lyneiwoodward- thank you and your classmates so much for all of your posts...they have been so helpful and full of useful information. Do you know how many students usually receive the NEAT?
Congratulations to everyone!!!
