EMORY ABSN+MSN 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

So I decided to start a thread for the Fall 2017. Any current/prospective student on here? What GPA did you have when you applied and how competitive is the selection process? If you don't mind sharing your work experience and GRE score, that will be awesome. For those who are enrolled, do you mind sharing your experience?

So, I went on their website, and i'm not seeing how things add up to 180k without room and board....This is what I got from their website: ABSN:

[TABLE=class: table financial-aid-table col-sm-3, width: 815]

I'm sure living expenses wouldn't cost 22k + 15k. Also, Yes the ABSN only calculated 3 semesters, but with the addition of a 4th semester and with not living like a Kardashian, I'm sure that it wouldn't cost 180k before room and board. Also, 2016/2017 prices wouldn't been THAT far off from the 2017/2018 prices.

Accelerated BSN Financial Aid 2

Gladly, I am not the only one worried about the cost. Don't lose hope, your last option might be a better one. I am looking at other options too, even if it means getting into an ABSN program for a much lower cost, and then applying to MSN later on. i don't want to rush into this only to regret later.

I'm on the same boat- paid my deposit but having second thoughts. My worst nightmare is failing out of the program with the horrendous amount of loans still left with me. Although it may sound far-fetched and extremely pessimistic, I think this is a very possible scenario for me, considering how accelerated their entire ABSN+MSN curriculum is... I called them and asked if it'd be possible to defer enrollment, and they told me that they can only defer my "application" and not my "enrollment." Basically, they will throw your application into the next cycle and you would have to compete against a brand new pool of applicants again. I asked if it's going to be possible to opt out of just the MSN portion if I ever end up changing my mind about it in the middle of my ABSN program, and they said that they "would not recommend that," since that means I would have taken up a spot of a rejected applicant who WOULD have been willing to go through the entire ABSN+MSN. I then asked if it'd be possible to just give up the MSN portion completely and join the ABSN cohort which begins in fall semester. They said I can't do that either. *sigh* It sucks because I've been rejected from all other entry-level MSN programs so far, and Emory's the only one that I got into....I'm waiting to hear back from one more school that is much cheaper (and closer!) than Emory. But honestly, after all these rejections, I'm not counting on it...I'm also considering giving up on going to a school this year altogether and applying again next year.

right, it's easy to just jump into it now and tell ourselves to let tomorrow's us think about tomorrow's problems. but to pay $11k/yr in interest alone? in interest?! like, we're trying to be nurses/NPs. we're not gonna be rich. does it really make sense to take out all of this loan (which is ridiculously insaaaane in the membraaane to begin with) when we can get the same degree(s) for way less?

emory offer this rate because there are people willing to spend the money for it. but let's be for real. people who go to emory are either a) rich b) have scholarships c) it's their 1st degree so they're eligible for many more finaid assistance d) incredibly naive about how the real world works when it comes to being burden by debt.

think long and hard, guys! we still got time. good luck! you'll be successful, no matter what!

Per the link found below (as well as the screen shot you've provided) tuition per semester is $21,800. The ABSN/MSN is a minimum of 8 semesters...$21,800*8=$174,400. Furthermore if the cost of fees and book supplies (neglecting living expenses/transportation costs) is calculated in with this total we get a total of $189,016. Certainly there are some ways to skim down this amount (buying used books/scrubs from previous students, financial aid/FWS, outside scholarships, HPSP, etc....). I agree the amount they state you should live off of is way too much. Just wanted to clarify :)

Tuition | Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing | University | Atlanta GA

ABSN is 21,800 per semester x 4 = 87, 200

AMSN is also 21, 800 per semester x 4 = 87,200

So total of 174, 400 on just tuition.

The 43,600 you see for MSN is for non accelerated format per year. That covers just fall/spring semester, so you will still have to pay another 43,600 for the second year.

Accelerated BSN Financial Aid 217 | Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing | University | Atlanta GA

Interesting.... I got those numbers from the Accelerated MSN and Accelerated BSN financial aid sites, not the general MSN. I'll call tomorrow to double verify.

Do NOT go by the financial aid website or the nursing website for now; they do not reflect accurate information as of yet. Even the people working at the admission's office themselves do not have an accurate idea of the cost. Instead, they gave me the e-mail address of Katie Kennedy, the financial aid director for the program, and told me to go by her words. I emailed her to clear up the discrepancy between all of these websites, and this is what she said in her e-mail:

"Here is a snapshot of the costs for the BSN portion of the program (which you can double to estimate the cost for the MSN program).

This is based on students who enrolled in summer 2016 as tuition costs for fall 2017-summer 2018 have not yet been approved.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Katie

So yes, the amount that is solely BILLED to our accounts is over $87,000 per 4 semesters...without supplies, textbooks, etc. And she clearly stated in the e-mail that we would have to DOUBLE that amount in order to get the total cost of the ABSN+MSN, which comes to over $174,000. I know that's technically less than 180k, but we might as well consider it equivalent to 180k since $6,000 seems like a miniscule difference at this point when the total number is that high.

Thanks for sharing this.

$87k for a BSN.

hell no. almost threw up a little. anyone NOT on a scholarship seriously still considering this school? if so, why??????

i mean, GA residents can go to ksu or gsu and get their BSN at the same amount of time LESS than the cost of 1 semester at emory.

gsu deadline for the fall is march 1st. seriously, almost 90k for a BSN at emory..... hell to the no.

The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing works hard to ensure that an Emory nursing education can be within your reach financially. We do not expect students to finance their nursing education 100% through loan sources. We will work directly with any student who is interested in applying for external scholarship programs such as the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Veterans Administration or other such programs. We have numerous currently enrolled students receiving full tuition funding through such sources and have experienced staff members available to assist with preparing application materials. We are happy to work with you individually on any of your questions related to attending Emory. If you would like for a staff member from the Office of Enrollment and Student Affairs to speak with you individually regarding your questions related to financial aid and scholarships, please email[email protected] with the subject line of AMSN Individual Financial Aid/Scholarship Advising.” Please include your specific questions in the body of the email and someone will reach back out to you to get your questions answered. We are here to help you to the best of our ability.

You say that, but I've had a bad experience thus far dealing with financial aid. The person (I won't say their name) was quite rude when I agonized about paying 87k in loans (almost 90% in private!) and if there were other options. No matter who I talked to, they were quick to give me their sale pitch, telling me it was an investment in my future, and if I wasn't interested, then this school is not the right school for me...

It's easy for you to be defensive telling us that there are staff available to help us apply for external scholarship, but those are external scholarships. You make it sound like everyone can attain them. Your job is to sale Emory and I understand. But some of us are frustrated by this and it's honestly not worth the stress and trouble. Because right now I feel like Emory doesn't care about me as an individual but as a wallet to take money from.
