EMORY ABSN+MSN 2017

Published

So I decided to start a thread for the Fall 2017. Any current/prospective student on here? What GPA did you have when you applied and how competitive is the selection process? If you don't mind sharing your work experience and GRE score, that will be awesome. For those who are enrolled, do you mind sharing your experience?

I haven't had a very pleasant experience either:

I applied for the Dec 15 deadline hoping to be considered for the merit scholarship. I took the GRE and had my score submitted on time for the January 15th notification date. Jan 15th came and went, I hadn't heard anything. I contacted the office via email asking if I was missing something and inquired about a "waiver request approved" notification that had popped up in my checklist on Dec 26. I was told they were still waiting for my GRE score and my inquiry about the notification was unacknowledged.

I contacted ETS that following Monday to see why my score hadn't been sent. They told me Emory had received my score almost 2 weeks prior to my phone call. So I called Emory's office, I was told that they could see my score was in the system and that the "person who handles that" would take care of it by the end of the next day (Tuesday).

Wednesday, my GRE status on my checklist hadn't changed so I, once again, called the Emory office. I spoke to a different female. She shuffled around, hmmed and hawed, and at first told me that my score hadn't been updated yet because they had just received it the night before (lie). Then she told me that I didn't even need to take the GRE and that the "waiver request approved" meant that my GPA was high enough to not need the GRE score. I requested to speak to the head of admissions at this point, because now I got screwed out of the merit scholarship consideration cycle. They wouldn't let me speak to him/her and I was told I'd have to wait till February 15 for my decision! I was so frustrated. My application was most likely put at the bottom of the next cycle with no consideration that it should've been reviewed weeks ago.

So due to "human error," I wasted over $200 taking the GRE and my winter break to study. I had to cancel holiday travel plans so I could prepare. I got lied to, made to wait an additional month for a notification, and then waitlisted.

I'm aware every office has its problems and errors occur, but for how much tuition costs, you'd expect a bit more competency.

You say that, but I've had a bad experience thus far dealing with financial aid. The person (I won't say their name) was quite rude when I agonized about paying 87k in loans (almost 90% in private!) and if there were other options. No matter who I talked to, they were quick to give me their sale pitch, telling me it was an investment in my future, and if I wasn't interested, then this school is not the right school for me...

It's easy for you to be defensive telling us that there are staff available to help us apply for external scholarship, but those are external scholarships. You make it sound like everyone can attain them. Your job is to sale Emory and I understand. But some of us are frustrated by this and it's honestly not worth the stress and trouble. Because right now I feel like Emory doesn't care about me as an individual but as a wallet to take money from.

it's been rather quiet here. anyone got any luck talking with emory about the $$? anyone still planning on coming here?

Honestly I am still thinking. What about you?

I didn't pay my deposit.....I spoke with financial aide and was told that summer alone is ~30k and that after fed loans and grants, i'd have to take out ~20k in private loans just to be able to cover tuition. That's impossible.

Yeah that is a lot. I am 99.99% sure that I will not be attending, unless something happens miraculously.

I will not be going. I couldn't justify the price for the bsn considering the debt it would put my family in. I will get my bsn at a public university and perhaps return to emory for the msn. this is the wisest course for me, but it may not be for everyone. I chose this for myself because i knew that the debt would affect me mentally, and didn't want to put my family under another financial burden, particularly one that can be avoided. but if you can manage it and really want this, then go for it. I would just say to think about it, but think for yourself and do what's best for you and your family.

i feel like there's a filter every time i talk with emory. when i ask them about certain things pertaining to financial aid, they'll ignore my question and say something else... and it's been happening over and over. they say that they never turn people down because of financial problems, but it's the other way around. people turn THEM down because of financial problems. it's disheartening that you try so hard to get accepted to an awesome nursing school, only to have to tell them no because they don't give a crap that you'll be taking a ridic amount of private loans WHEN you can go to a public OR other private school for half the cost.

seriously. university of miami absn program is only 12 months, and the tuition for a BSN is $40k. and they are also an awesome program. i don't understand how emory can continuously justify their $87k pricetag for the same degree.

I've submitted the deposit, but not committed yet. Every time I think about the financial situation, and recalculate, the numbers seem to get more daunting. It's actually more like $23K a semester if you include fees/transportation fees, books, etc. If I don't get enough financial aid, I can't go.

I have decided not to attend as the cost is too much. I have been accepted to a direct entry DNP program for $90k. Good luck all.

what's your idea of finaid aid? seems like all emory is willing to shove in my face are private loans... :/
