Hi, everyone! I've been reading this forum since I was a nursing student back in 2004 and now find myself transitioning into private duty independent contracting after three years at the bedside. The information you all have posted regarding this process has been invaluable and I thank you so much. I just applied as a Medicaid provider in NY and noticed it says "if you are a nurse applying for Medicaid enrollment and are employed in a physician's office or hospital you are not eligible for Medicaid reimbursement". I currently work per diem in the hospital while I'm trying to get enough clients to support myself in private duty. Does this mean I cannot be a Medicaid provider or that I can only bill Medicaid for nursing I do as an independent private duty nurse? I'm hoping for the latter!
Thanks again, in advance.

I'm hoping your interpretation of what you're hearing is wrong. I think they mean that you can't get reimbursed in those settings. To the best of my knowledge I don't see any reason at all why you can't work in a facility and also do private duty nursing in a home & get paid by medicaid for the homecare. You can always ask customer service - but I'm pretty certain you can do both. I (who also do private duty nursing thru medicaid) have been considering working per diem for a nursing home and keeping my homecare case - I never once thought this couldn't be do-able.

It would have to mean that you can not bill them for work performed in those settings. Simply keep your jobs separate from each other, which you would be doing anyway. You should have no problems. Be careful calling for clarification. You might get someone on the phone who insists on misinterpreting what you are explaining.

Hello Deekay,
I am a new LPN and have been looking into PDN through EmedNY.. given the dates on this thread i take it you must be quite the veteran; I was hoping for some insights: How was the experience in PDN and were you able to sustain yourself solely on those cases as originally intended? Any directions/Advice that would help guide me through the process would be greatly appreciated :-)

The original poster hasn't been back in a year but appears to be an RN that was ultimately working towards opening their own PDN/HH agency. So it seems this route was successful.
