Hiya :)

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help???

I am in my third year of nursing in edinburgh, Scotland and would love to arrange my elective placement across in Australia.

I have been advise to go to The Alfred in Melbourne. does anyone know about this hospital??

I would like to try either emergency nursing or neurology.

If anyone has any ideas for me or elective experiences they could share that would be great as Im not really sure how to get started in plaanning.

Thanks

I worked at the Alfred until I left Australia - great place to work in either ER or neuro. The ER in particular is very busy, with all levels of trauma and the state trauma service. You'd get a lot of experience there. The Alfred website has emails for various department nurse managers you can probably contact for more info.

Otherwise, LaTrobe or Deakin Univ both do clinicals there, if you contact someone at the uni.

Hi,

I'm also a student hoping to go over to Australia next year for my elective.

Does anyone know any useful infomation please?

Many thanks

I have no idea about how to organise an overseas placement but imagine you'd need to find a university happy to take you on, too. Most of the nursing programs in Melbourne have students rotate through the Alfred, so that aspect shouldn't be too difficult, hopefully.

As ghillbert noted, the Alfred houses the state trauma centre and a fairly busy emergency department. Neurosciences are divided, with neurology and stroke sharing a ward with other medical specialties, while neurosurg is affiliated with the trauma unit (trauma, ortho etc).

I tried this years ago when I was a student and just recently when I had to do a clinical.

The university that only needs to know and agree is yours. The hospital has to agree and a contract between the university and the hospital needs to be drawn up and signed before you can go on placement there. All about legal standing in case you do damage or you get damaged.

Email a few big hospitals get onto undergraduate co-ordinator and see how you go.

I was suppose to go up to Brisbane once and the contract was not drawn up in time from my university. Its a real pain in the...but lawyers have to make their money somewhere.

I did read somewhere that Wesley hospital (its private) in Brisbane gave international placements give them a try....good luck

i'm an australian student currently doing prac at the wesley and yes, they do take international students directly. we just had some from singapore who were really nice. more info available here (i know it says graduate program but these are the right people to talk to): The Wesley Hospital - Contact us
