El Centro / Northlake ADN orientation

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello again! I was accepted into the Fall 09 semester at northlake and was wondering if anyone knew whether or not we needed to pay for tuition and books at orientation on June 18th? I remember reading someone's post a while back about having to come up with the money for books at the time of orientation but couldn't find it again. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate the heads up so I can save some money by then!

Thanks in advance

I am wondering the same thing. I will be at El Centro starting fall 2009and orientation for me is june 16-a tuesday. I know that they will be selling the scrubs, but I don't know about books and registration.

You will only need to pay for your scrubs at the time of orientation. I suggest bringing a check. They accept CC's but they will have to write down your number and ring it up later, as the uniform company is from OK. Personally I wouldn't buy the pants, they are not flattering, they are the tapered leg so most of us went out and found our own black pants.

She will let you know the date she will register you for your classes after orientation. When that day comes, make sure you pay that day! LAst semester they gave us the one day and those who didn't pay got dropped. They fized it, but it did cause a lot of people to be upset.

Books are really expensive! I think nearly $900 and we only used two out of the entire pack.

Seriously, the books are CRAZY expensive, so if funds are tight, just get your Potter/Perry and Iggy. Those were the ONLY two books I purchased for the entire duration of nursing school. I utilized the some of the "Straight A's" books for subjects like OB and pediatrics, other than that, I bought nothing.

Oh, and what ProudRN2B said is true, the pants are horrible, so don't buy them. Just get one scrub top and the lab coat (which you'll never wear except for check-offs during 1st and 2nd semester, so it's another waist of money).

Yes the books are that expensive now! Well close to it. I think it was like $850 after tax and including the $30 skills pack that we never used either. They get you by saying if you don't buy the book box, you can't have to online tool. I never used the books online. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'd rather read from the book, not on the computer. We only used the Potter/Perry and the Iggy. The rest were a waste.

I agree with the scrubs, one top and one lab coat. I also didn't buy their shoes. You can get some very comfy Dr. Scholls at Walmart for $20.

Yes, you are all right! the books are very expensive. Just wait until the orientation and we will get the list. The box with the books is $821 + tax and 10% off discount. The vendor is Majors and I went the other day to check the books, but of course they did not tell me what was in the box since is sealed and they cannot open it. They told me as well that they will not be selling the box with the books in the orientation because every box weights 40 pounds, and you would have to go and pick the books up at the store. They told me that there is a lot of media not only books. If you want to buy the scrubs in advance you can go directly to the store because they already have the scrubs for sale. I already tried them on and I really like them since one have a strap on the back and it looks very feminine. I am agree with the pants, buy them in some place else. I have been talking to other students that are going to 3rd semester and second, and actual nurses that graduated last year and everybody have been telling me the same "do not buy the box because is a waste of money". They told me that they only used two or three books the most (Igy and fundamentals from Potter). If someone else have more information please post it.:D

WOW, thanks for all the information guys! What color are our scrubs going to be?

Black pants. You can get any black pants and any black shoes as long as there is no logo on the shoes. The tops are light blue, they will have to El Centro Logo...

I am so appreciative of all the helpful info!! Never realized I would get so much response from posting but I'm starting to like this website! Anyways....one more questions for those of you that know. Name badges that they require?! Are we allowed to put the name we go by or does it have to be our real name? Like I go by Julee but my actual name is Tien....i would hate to have that on my name badge because nobody calls me that...and it's hard for some people to pronounce. Also, any info on where to get them would be nice too!

Thanks!!

I would make the name badge match your student ID. Some instructors are so particular about wearing them but some aren't. We had to wear our name badge, our student ID and a hospital ID.

They are so small no one looks at them any way. We had dry erase boards in the patients room that we wrote our names on under their nurses name so they could remember it.

For those of you going to orientation who will be ordering scrubs...I ordered medium tops and they seemed to be a million times bigger than what I tried on at orientation and I also lost several pounds so mine swallow me. If anyone wears a medium, I'll swap you if you order a small. I have two tops they botton down, one of them I haven't even worn so they are both in great shape. PM me if you want to work something out, I'd appreciate it.

Or anyone know the vendor name...I lost the contact information. Thanks
