It won't work well unless they are 100% cotton. Polyester doesn't take most dyes. I called Rit about this same issue some time back. They basically told me to forget it.

Even on 100% cotton scrubs the thread used to sew them up may be 100% polyester or a cotton/poly blend. Either way it won't take color the way the main fabric will. This leaves you with white or barely tinted thread against whatever colour you dyed the scrubs.
Better bet is to hunt aroud thrift stores, charity shops, eBay and CL for used or even NIB scrubs on the cheap.

Since my husband and I are in serious money saving mode and the fact that we cannot afford extras right now, I am considering dyeing my white scrubs for my first job until we can afford new ones. Has anyone ever done this? How do they look afterward? Does the color bleed or rub off onto fabric?
