Duquesne Second Degree Nursing Class of 2016

Published

Hey everybody, I recently just got the news that I was accepted into Duquesne's Second Degree Nursing program starting in the Fall 2015 semester! Was just curious to see if there was anyone else out there interested in reaching out to other accepted students!

I would love to stay in student housing (depending on the cost..) but I have a cat and I have a feeling that may be a problem :(. You know in the information packet it says that it is mandatory that students have a car :/ for getting to all of the different hospitals and health care agencies. I would happily let you carpool with me to clinicals if we could somehow coordinate schedules and whatnot.

Are you currently close to Pittsburgh? I live in GA right now and have never been to Pittsburgh...I won't be able to see the campus or surrounding areas until August...maybe I could help you out with a car if you can help me locate inexpensive, convenient housing lol!

Duquesne sits right in the downtown area of pittsburgh. One of the more convenient places to live would be the South side flats; you can just search on craigslist for that area and you will find a ton of listings. But, remember, you want the southside FLATS and not southside slopes.

Aside from living right in the downtown area, the southside is probably one of the more convenient locations. This is where i live and i can tell you alot of Duquesne students walk/bike to campus as it is only about a mile away. Also, there are duquesne shuttles that run out of the southside and take you to campus, though, i dont know how helpful these will be.

Other options could include Oakland, shadyside or the strip district; these are all reasonably close to duquesne, but, would require you to drive or bus in. Anyway, if anyone has questions about what certain areas of the city are like, feel free to ask me.

Thanks for the info! I guess I am more so just looking to rent a room from someone in those neighborhoods. I had a general idea of which neighborhoods were better than others, but knowing that the southside flats is a good place is very helpful.

I would check the pittsburgh craigslist rooms for rent or roommates wanted section. Its a good time to do it, especially considering its graduation/move out season.

I was sneaking on allll day while at work haha, I've replied to several ads and have posted 2 of my own of the past few weeks but no luck yet...any idea as to whether the resident office would have advice as to roommates? I really want people who are in the program as it would just make life so much easier...

I definitely agree! It would be great to find roommates who are in the program as well so we can all study together and what not. I've been browsing around on Craigslist too around Southside Flats just to estimate the prices and locations I can expect.

I won't have a car either since I'm coming from California and won't be able to visit Pittsburgh until a week or so before classes start. I had a friend in an ABSN program who didn't have a car so the clinical schedulers assigned her to a hospital that was walking distance for the duration of the program. It was at a different school so I don't know if they do the same at Duquesne, but hopefully there are buses nearby!

Hey guys! Im also planning on going to Duquesne starting in August for the 2nd degree program. I just joined this website specifically for this thread! Im completely up for trying to find some living arrangements with anyone that is also looking. Im moving from Philadelphia, but I wont be able to make it out to Pittsburgh until about a week before the program start date. Email me if youd like to try to find a place to live as I think it'd be much more affordable to have roommates not to mention beneficial if were in the same nursing program! [email protected]

Congrats to everyone!

And I will have a car with me if that helps. Of course I'd be more than happy to help anyone out that doesn't have a car available.

I'm attending the Duquesne absn program in the fall too! I'm just living in the on campus apartment, but I live in Pittsburgh so maybe I can help anyone if you have questions. It might be easier if someone starts a Facebook group like they have in past to communicate with other people in the program

What's the deal with the on campus housing? Do you live alone? About how much is the rent? If you don't mind me asking

I'm sharing a 2 BR/1BA with 3 other girls. I don't know the exact price but I have a 12 month lease for around $5,000

Oh OK gotya. Thanks for the info I appreciate it!

Im not sure which hospitals Duquesne uses for clinicals, but, i assume Mercy, Presby and Childrens. Anyway, all of these hospitals are easily accessible by bus. Mercy sits on the Duquesne campus, so, no problems there. The 54c and 54d out of the southside will take you to Presby and to Childrens hospital, too.

Im not sure if Duquesne offers free bus fare, but, I know Pitt students ride city buses for free. Otherwise, a monthly bus pass is about $100.
