Hi everyone,
I'm happy to say I was recently accepted into Duquesne University's second degree BSN program beginning in August 2016. But I have been doing my research on reviews of this program and throughout this forum, and it seems that there are quite a few people with negative comments. I heard that the program has been changed and improved in the last year.
So I am curious - recent graduates of this program, honestly, what was your experience like? Would you recommend it? And if not, what didn't you like about it?
Thanks
Hi guys! I came across this thread, I am currently in the 2nd degree program so I can try to answer any questions you have about it especially if you're still trying to decide. I'm also from Pittsburgh so I know the are well and I love it here. This is the first year with the expanded program so we're divided into 2 sections which is nice because we're always with the same people and you can really get to know everyone. I finished my first semester in December and like people said the days are very long. We had clinical 1 day a week with 4 days of classes that were 1.5-3 hour classes. This semester we have clinical 3 days a week with classes 2 and those are 3-4 hour classes. It is hard, but definitely do able if you manage your time well. I put in a a lot of work and study a lot but I still have fun and usually go out 1 night on the weekends. I've read a lot of negative comments about the program too, but it is a 1 year accelerated program so the curriculum and classes are always changing which can be frustrating and information and classes are constantly being thrown at you.
Hi there! Could you provide a daily schedule for like a week? I'm wondering what class times are (how long between classes, what times to be there, etc). Maybe you could join our Facebook group and we could ask you there if it's easier? Thank you so so much for offering to answer our questions!
I actually live in the apartments on campus because I thought it would be the easiest for me. I know people who commute from that area and it's not far from campus. Rush hour traffic does get bad because it's right in the city, but definitely manageable from where you'll be and you can easily take the bus from there too.
Your schedule will probably be similar so last semester I had clinical 1 day a week 7-2ish. The other days I had classes 8-3/4 with the longest break being an hour but we did get out of class early some days. This semester we have clinical 3 days a week and there is a chance of having an evening rotation, but if you have kids they won't give you that slot if you tell them. The clinical sites are all over so you could be placed anywhere around the area. We only have classes 2 days a week so Monday's I have 10 hours of class and Tuesday's 7 hours so I don't get done until 6-7. There are quite a few people in the program who have children and they make it work.
I live in Brottier it's a 12 month lease for about $6000 it's furnished it has an exercise room and free laundry. I have 3 other roommates but I just did random roommates, you can call and ask about it and it's on Duquesne's website. There's also brand new ones called Union on 5th ave I think but I'm not sure the price. A lot of people find apartments in southside flats that's close to campus.
