Duke University ABSN Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I just wanted to start a thread for prospective students hoping to start Duke's ABSN program in the Fall of 2018! Feel free to leave any questions or background info!

I also applied for the HEA, but have not heard anything about interviews (unfortunately).

Hey! Has anyone applied to other programs and heard back? I was accepted to Hopkins, Columbia and waitlisted for Upenn. I am having a really hard time trying to decide between programs, in addition to waiting it out for Duke. If anyone is in a similar situation, I would love to hear your thoughts on Duke and why/if its your top choice, or why you are choosing to attend somewhere else before hearing back from Duke. My concern re Duke is that the MSN programs are distance learning, and although I know it seems more convenient, I learn best through interaction and hands on learning... so its hard to imagine feeling confident or truly engaged in this scenario. That being said, I have only taken single online courses in the past. Thank you for any insight!

I was accepted at Penn, Colorado is supposed to notify this week, and then I'm still waiting on the rest of my schools (, Capital U in Ohio, Oregon Health Sciences) including Duke. I had to withdraw my app from UNC after looking at the matriculation tab on the website and seeing how early their program starts -- I'm finishing off one prereq for a different program this semester and I would have less than a week to finish finals and relocate, and that's just too insane.

Penn, Colorado, and Duke are my top 3 choices -The thought of not knowing Duke's decision before I have to make a decision on my other offer(s?) really stinks, because hubby and I are trying to figure out what city will be best for us to move to, and I know he was interested in the Raleigh/Durham area as one of our potential options.

So I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on Duke's ABSN program compared to other programs as well.

Just FYI, I spoke to someone at Duke admissions that mentioned decisions would be released in March. Her reaction to my asking if we would know early April, as others had suggested, made me assume it would be early to mid March. Not sure if this eases your anxiety going forward. It certainly made a difference for me!

Will the actual decisions be released in March or will they release the invitations to Duke Days?

I was told decisions would be released in March. The woman I spoke with seemed confused at my asking if decisions would be released in April haha... Upon checking previous years on allnurses, it seems decisions were typically released early March and it may have only been 1 or 2 years when they were released so late. But I can't make any promises either!

Has anyone received any communication from the School of Nursing?

Nothing. I emailed them last week to ask if there was an anticipated timeline re: decisions, because I have other offers I have to respond to by early to mid March, but I haven't heard anything back. Their (lack of) communication has been frustrating compared to most of my other programs that I applied to. Hopefully someone else has heard something.

Nothing! waiting patiently...

This is my third time applying since I have been waitlisted twice already. So let me help by giving some insight to new applicants. You will not hear anything about decisions until both Duke Days are complete. You will likely receive an invite in the next week or so regarding Duke Days. Those that are chosen to attend are either accepted or waitlisted. Obviously in my case, I was waitlisted. Duke is the only school I apply for since I have a business and family here. Most of the applicants at Duke Days are from out of town and I was one of the few that are actually based locally so they are definitely looking for a diverse cohort. For last fall, there were too many applicants and many of those who were waitlisted were not invited to Duke days. I would assume that the Fall semester is more popular, so don't be surprised if you were not invited. It could still mean that you are waitlisted. If anyone has questions, I will try to answer them.

@cgiles132004 thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the information! Do you know a round about date on when Duke Days is? And decisions won't be "official" until after Duke Day.. so it could be April/May before we know if we are accepted?
