Duke University ABSN Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I just wanted to start a thread for prospective students hoping to start Duke's ABSN program in the Fall of 2018! Feel free to leave any questions or background info!

Does anyone have any idea/previous knowledge of when they give financial aid packages out? I know they said to expect something 30 days from getting accepted. I'm just trying to have some kind of plan to consider all my options.

I think they said that within 2 weeks of being notified of your acceptance they will send you a financial aid offer. Then, you have two weeks to decide on your decision leading to a total of 30 days for the entire process before they will start selections from their waitlisted students (if the first group starts rejecting the offers).

I got accepted! Congratulations to everyone. I have also already submitted a deposit to another school. Duke has been my dream school, but it's hard to change gears because with my other program starting in May, I have so much in place already. I think I'm going to take the leap and go to Duke.

Congrats on your acceptance! I've been accepted to Duke as well, but I've also already deposited at other schools. Duke is an awesome option for nursing school, but I'm concerned about how much financial aid I will receive as well as the Fall start date. The other programs I've been accepted to, Miami and NJCU, costs half as much as Duke and start in May. May I ask what other school you are thinking about and what is leading you to lean towards Duke?

Check your email for Duke Day invites!!

I also received an invitation for Duke Days even though I'm waitlisted. Did other waitlisted people get invited too?

Duke has top 3 nursing program and it is one of the top schools in the country. Just imagine how that will look on your resume as you not only apply to different jobs but even to different programs. I just think this is a great opportunity that you dont want to miss out on.

So true!!!! Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. Some hard decisions to think about in the next few days.

I can agree that Duke is definitely an amazing school that will open a lot of doors. But is it worth at least $80K to have that name on your resume when other programs like Miami are strong in themselves and are half the cost? In arguably better locations and in a shorter amount of time as well?

I'm also accounting for the fact that we would be getting a BSN degree. I don't think it matters where you get your BSN as much as it would be getting your graduate degree. We have to pass to same NCLEX exam to get certified and we are all nurses at the end of undergrad regardless of where you go. That's my dilemma right now.

Believe it or not some employers look at your school and take that into account. I work in the cath lab as a cardiovascular tech and I hear reps and doctors and the first thing they ask is where they got their degree from. A rep yesterday told me one of the reasons why he is giving an interview to a new grad is because she will graduate from Duke in 54 days. The reason why I dont mind paying 80k is because I live in Chicago and 80k is what I would pay for a BSN in most schools here. Additionally, I want to go for CRNA and it is highly competitive so I want any advantage I can get. So it just depends on what you see yourself doing in the future, I agree that you dont need to pay 80k for a degree if you can get it for half the price but I paid 25k for a car that depreciates in value lol So I see this as a better investment.

I've really heard it doesn't make too much of a difference where you get your BSN. Plenty of nurses find work after graduating from other universities and community colleges

I am a close friend with someone who is currently doing MSN at Duke Nursing School. I've received lots of advices from her in terms of nursing and she told me that where you get your BSN isn't a big deal IF you are thinking of going to graduate school in nursing. If you plan to only get a BSN in nursing, then yes, where you get your BSN will be important. When applying to graduate school, she was very intimidated because her nursing school was neither competitive nor well known. But because she did well academically and had lots of experiences in serving community as an RN, she was able to get into the program. She also told me that very little of her classmates are from Ivy League schools. They did, however, come from various nursing schools with commitment to success and good GPA. Talking to her made me think of the saying "It's not where you start, but where you finish"

Just thought I'd share my thoughts :)

I got in, but already accepted my spot at U Penn and decided not to change gears, especially since Duke hasn't' released financial aid info yet. Penn and Duke were my top 2 choices, so I consider myself lucky to have the choice, even if I didn't know I had the choice until weeks later haha.

Congrats and best of luck to all! Thanks for making the anxiety-inducing wait for communication a little bit better :)
