Duke ABSN Spring 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Hello everyone!

I thought I would start a thread for prospective Blue Devils. I would love to hear about each of your backgrounds, professional experience and/or where else you may have applied. Have any of you applied to Duke's ABSN before? This might be a great place to ask questions, share insights and tips for submitting a strong application!

Me: I live in Portland, Oregon. I graduated with a BA in Psychology in 2010. Since then I have worked in domestic violence shelters, mental health crisis centers and in outpatient addiction treatment. I quit my mental health case manager job to pursue nursing almost 2 years ago now! I have been volunteering at a Burn ICU in town. I applied to USFCA in Orange County (safety!) and Johns Hopkins for Fall '18, in which I have been waitlisted. I have an underwhelming undergraduate GPA and a 4.0 in prerequisites. In my applications I've done my best to highlight my professional experience and dedication to under served and under resourced populations. I also submitted a supplemental essay explaining poor undergraduate academic performance. I did notice however that Duke's application portal doesn't have a place to upload supplemental materials. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how I could get this essay in front of the admissions committee?

I can't wait to hear about you all! :)

When do admissions decision come out for ABSN Spring 19 cohort?

Sometime after July 2nd.

Is that date on the website?

One of the admission officer last week told me decisions would be out by the end of the June and invitation to Duke Days for admitted and waitlisted students is in July.

I just want decisions to comeout already lol. I just need to be more patient.

Reminder for everyone to make sure the financial aid documents to be turned in by June 14 for CSS profile and Juke 17 for IDOC.

The website states that admission decisions are made in July. See under "Application Review": Deadlines and Important Dates | Duke School of Nursing

Don't we hear back about Duke Days before our actual acceptances?

I thought so too based on previous forum posts. This is what one of the admissions officer wrote to me last week.

"Thank you for your inquiry. Decisions will go out at the end of this month. There are new interviews for ABSN students. Duke Days is an on campus event for admitted and waitlisted students. This event takes place in July. Let me know if you have any additional questions."

Whether it's in June or July, we're getting close :D

So are we going to have invitations to interview before decisions come out? I'm confused about the interview part...

Has anyone heard back about the HEA at all on this thread?

From what one of their admissions officers told me, HEA is only available for the Fall.

At this point, I'm rather anxious. It sounds like the decisions come out in early July, but from previous threads it seems like they are generally late with the process so it's end of July? Who knows.

I wonder how many applicants they received this cycle? So many questions we may never know the answers to until the most important question is answered.

Does anyone know if we should be hearing back for Duke Days invintes soon? Last spring cohorts found out right around this time.

Decisions are out! I couldn't open it on my mobile phone. I'll have to wait a few hours before I get access to a computer!
