Duke ABSN Spring 2015

Published

Anyone else applying to Duke's ABSN program for Spring 2015? As we're approaching the application deadline, I thought it would be great to get a conversation started. If anyone is currently in the program, I would love to hear your thoughts about the program as well.

Myischmo, that is fabulous!!!!!:roflmao: You will absolutely LOVE Duke!!!!

Homelife, it is pretty intense--but doable as long as you're not working and you budget your time properly. I basically go to class all day for four days(8am-5:00) and review/organize every night. You'll want to set time aside each day of the week--this is not just a catch-up on the weekends program. They've told us it gets more difficult with each semester. I'll keep you posted. You seem very "together", so I'm sure you'll do very well! The faculty are amazing and do everything they can to help you succeed.

Thank you running05! I was sent an email yesterday afternoon to view the updated decision.

Thank you vbee! I am so excited!!! I can't withdraw from the program I am in right now, so I will just finish out the semester. It can only help me, right? Now to figure out whether to sell or rent our house, where to live, how to pay, etc.

Thanks for the info, vbee! I'd be interested to hear more details of how your semester is progressing down the line, and of course, I'll be running into you in a not-so distant future on campus!

myischmo, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so happy for you since you were so deadset on Duke. Are you positive you can't withdraw from your program and get a refund? I'm sure if you told the program coordinator the specifics about how you JUST heard back and how Duke was your #1 choice, they might be able to help you out there. It's worth a shot considering you have bigger fish to fry with moving costs, debating selling/renting your home, etc. running05, I'm still hoping for you!

Thank you homelife! Yes, I'm sure. :(. I actually checked into it already. The last day for me to receive a refund was the 27th. If I quit now, I have to pay back my loans and scholarships for not completing the minimum 60% of the semester. It's okay. I knew this scenario was a possibility when I started the program, but I didn't want to give up my seat in case I never heard back from Duke. It's a good university and a good program. I am loving the curriculum even though it's intense (sleeping is now a luxury). I now know without a doubt that nursing is the field I want to be in, but the school is not the right fit for me for many reasons. So, I'm psyched Duke has offered me this opportunity. Running05 and anyone else still waiting, I have my fingers crossed for you! It's only September so don't give up!

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. For those accepted off the wait list did they give you an idea of how many spots opened up? Just trying to plan accordingly. Thanks again!

running05, she said a few but didn't give an exact number, but there's no certainty that everyone that was invited will accept either. Plus, it's only the month of September. I'm sure more spots will open from those that accepted and later changed their mind. Also, I don't believe UNC-Chapel Hill has made their admissions decision yet. It has happened in the past where students accepted to both schools end up selecting UNC due to cost. It's an excellent school as well.

I certainly understand wanting to look at other options in the meantime. I went ahead and started another nursing program in case I never heard from Duke, but don't count them out yet either. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

For you guys coming in Spring 2015, you are really going to like the new curriculum. I think it has been great so far :)

Maybe I'm a broken record and have asked you specifically before, but can you give us insight into what the daily schedule is like, how similar it is to your classmates, and the changes in curriculum?

I was one who was bummed about Duke taking away the graduate level course credits, but I realize WHY they did so and how we can still have opportunity to take classes at graduate level if we choose!

I am so pumped for January.

Well, there might be changes to what days you guys have classes, lab and clinical. But this semester, we have class Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Some people have lab either Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon or Thursday morning and Friday morning and then you have clinical which can be scheduled anyway day, Monday-Friday. For your first semester, you will focus on wellness. Y You learn about healthy lifestyle changes such as exercise, nutrition, developmental milestones of children, etc. Plus you learn a lot of skills such as taking someone's vital signs. It is really about giving us a foundation.

is duke rolling?
