Duke ABSN Fall 2017

U.S.A. North Carolina

Hi guys! I haven't seen a thread yet for Duke's ABSN Fall 2017 yet, so just thought I'd get it started! I'm excited to be attending the open house later in September and look forward to meeting some of you there.

There wasn't mention of statistics, but there was an emphasis on the fact that they really try to look at the whole person rather than just GPA and things like that. There was a whole presentation on financial aid. There are a lot of opportunities for aid, scholarships and things like that. They also had two financial aid officers there for any questions you may have.

Thanks so much :) I'm excited to head down there this weekend! I'm so eager to hear from them.

Does anyone have any insight as to why they decided to release the decisions following Duke Days this year? My friend was accepted last year into the Fall 2016 cohort in early March and then attended Duke Days over the summer following being accepted

Hi lrtyson, I'm not sure why they did it differently this year. I had the same question as I had also heard something similar with regards to last fall's cohort. It may have to do with the number of applicants overall? I will be heading to Duke Days this week, and I am so excited to see the school and learn more! Duke is hands down my top choice. Thank you for sharing the information about the financial Aid, as that is reassuring! Were there very many nontraditional students there (as in older - I am one of those!)? Did you have a chance to talk personally with any of the faculty? I am hoping that all of us get accepted and will have the chance to meet each other this coming fall. Hang in there everyone - we are on the home stretch!

I attended Duke Days last week as well. I recommend taking the walking tour as opposed to the bus tour if you are offered a choice. Also, if you tend to be allergic to tree pollen be sure to bring an antihistamine because it seems the whole of Durham is coated Pine and Oak "devil dust". I wouldn't worry too much about GPA. They mentioned they are looking for well rounded students.

Maybe so! Yes, it was a very diverse group of people, which I think is something that Duke strives for. We had a chance to speak with faculty personally and there was a panel of current and previous students. There are students ranging from recent graduates spanning to people in their 50s and 60s with all different kinds of degrees and experiences. I hope so too, next week can't come soon enough!

Anyone know if they have some type a tuition reimbursement program if you work for them? I remember reading that a few places, but there seems to be a few different things I've heard about it!

payasita and lrtyson, thanks for the great info! I will definitely take the walking tour if that is an option. What is everyone's background? My degrees are actually in business and marketing, but I've been working the past three years as a paramedic. For those of you that already attended Duke days, what impressed you the most? Are any of you planning to go on to get your MSN? Here's to the fall!

I am currently set to graduate from undergrad in May with a degree in exercise and sport science, and I have been working as a CNA for about a year while in school. I think what impressed me the most is the simulation lab that is top notch and nationally recognized. You get so much practice with them before you're expected to perform those tasks on a real person, which can make the first time seem less daunting. The faculty are also at the top of their field and seem very dedicated to the students. I am planning to go on to an MSN after working for a few years as an RN!

Hello possible classmates. I live in Portland Oregon and simply can't wait for those letters next week! I have a degree in vocal performance (3.35), work as a CNA at OHSU in the floatpool, and am interested in Duke's FNP track with an HIV certificate. I know they give really good need based scholarship for low income people as well as a few other scholarships for minorities in nursing. I'm also wondering when they will release merit scholarship decisions. Best of luck to you all and I hope to meet many of you soon!

Hi guys!

Is anyone else attending Duke Days tomorrow? I feel like I'm walking in blind AND solo haha!
