Duke ABSN Fall 2015

Published

Hi All,

Just wanted to get a thread going for those who are applying to the Fall 2015 ABSN program. What are some of your degrees in? Is anyone applying to other schools? Also, is anyone planning on moving to North Carolina to attend?

I will withdraw Fall of 2015 and reapply for 2016 Spring cohort. Hopefully someone will be that lucky one next week

Has anyone set up their appointment with financial aid? I recall them saying we would be all have a scheduled meeting with them "in the coming weeks" but I haven't heard anything.

I received an email about a week after Duke Days with a link to an online survey where you schedule a meeting over the phone with the financial aid office. If you never received this email, I'd suggest calling the financial aid office at (919) 684-9663 to speak with your financial aid counselor.

Thank you so much! I missed the email I think. Appreciate it!

Has anyone heard if there is a specific laptop that we should have for the program?

I just got accepted in off the waitlist. Going to turn it down. For people who have been wondering about this sort of thing, my stats were:

3.1 GPA from BA in English from a state school. 4.0 prereq GPA. 5+ years of home health care experience. 170 verbal, 155 quant, 4.5 writing.

Every time I hear that someone gets pulled off the waitlist I do get more hopeful for myself-- thanks to everyone who has posted in here because I feel like I have been able to be very "in the loop" in regards to the process, and I am very grateful for that!

I was just pulled from the waitlist as well. I'm seeing that tuition is around $19k per semester for 4 semesters? But then the "cost of attendance" sheet only shows 3 semesters for a total of about $62k for the program. Anyone have a solid idea about the real cost of attendance? How good is financial aid? Any help/info is greatly appreciated!

Duke is probably one of the most generous schools of all I got accepted to. I'll be attending a state school in CA which is much cheaper, but I can only take out 12,500 max in loans (Federal) a year. MGH is private, but their loans were equal to state school. Just to compare. Hopkins gave me the maximum grant and federal loans, but still out of pocket would have still cost around 50-60,000 including living cost. Duke's package was mostly Federal loans, with need-based aid, and out of pocket including living cost of about 40,000. So in the end, if you can, I'd go to a state school if money would be an issue. If money isn't an issue, Duke is one of the best nursing schools in the world. If you're in the South, look into Emory as well. They were generous as well, because they gave me the Dean's Scholarship, and although I haven't visited, the staff and faculty have been very helpful and encouraging. Another good school is NYU, very expensive, but some obtain positions at Langone, and they have a BS/MS program.

Please do keep in mind that Duke also allows you to matriculate into their graduate program, (maybe more loans???) and their hospital preferentially hires Duke graduates (so does Hopkins)... but they do not pay very well. It is for the name of the experience.

Cafe gypsy, that's a good question! I had 62k in my mind the whole time, but didn't actually do the math. 4 semesters would be 80+k!

I also think financial aid is partly reviewed by rolling basis. so you might want to check with the office and see if being pulled from waiting list= less financial aid.

isingthebodyelectric, have you turned down your offer yet?

And to cafegypsy as well, when did you both hear from the office? Thanks guys! Good luck in your decisions and your future endeavors
