Duke ABSN Fall 2015

Published

Hi All,

Just wanted to get a thread going for those who are applying to the Fall 2015 ABSN program. What are some of your degrees in? Is anyone applying to other schools? Also, is anyone planning on moving to North Carolina to attend?

congrats! That's so awesome! Did she give you a date to decide by?

Apr.24. So I will try to negotiate with school to see whether it is possible to postpone my admission.

Congratulations! Did you get an email from Nora today? What are your other options?

I did get an email from Nora that is how I knew to check my Applicant Self Service account. She did not say anything about other letters being sent out or not. I did not apply to anywhere else. But in the next 2 weeks I will decide whether to accept or decline and apply to UNC.

@futuremahu I have until April 24 to make a decision.

Will you let me know what they say about postponing? I'm almost positive that they don't do that but maybe I am mistaken.

That's awesome for both of you! Let us know what you decide. I have no update in my application but I am more hopeful knowing that they are least taking some people from the waitlist!

Today was an exciting day for me, as well. I was originally wait listed but was offered admission today. Congratulations to those who also got some good news today! :-) -Anne

Hello all,

I just wanted to stop by and share some advice. I was in the same spot as a lot of yall are now. I got accepted into Duke last year, however declined my offer due to financial reasons. I live in state, so I decided to apply to UNC's ABSN program. I'm in the program now and am absolutely loving it. It was really hard for me to decline Duke's offer, but for $60,000+ of debt for 16 months of education wasn't worth it to me. I worked with many nurses who graduated from both Duke and UNC, and all have had only great things to say about both programs. It all depends on what fits your needs best. I was afraid of postponing my dreams a little longer, but it was only 6 months more. I used that time to gain more experiences, did some traveling and just relaxed. Everything will work out in the end and I have absolutely no regrets! Congratulations and good luck to everyone!

Sofiacna, thank you so much for your post! I'm going crazy trying to decide whether to decline this offer and try for UNC. What if I don't get in to UNC?! AHH! Would you be ok if I sent you a PM with some questions? I would love any additional info from an actual student :)

Hi ncwildflowers!

Of course you can PM me! I'm not sure if I will be able to PM back since I haven't signed on a while and this site has weird restrictions at times, but I'll try my absolute best. It was definitely a scary thought of mine as well to decline a guranteed ticket to nursing school from Duke, but good thing is their ABSN program also runs twice a year, I applied to them again, UNC and two other schools as back ups. As a second degree student, you definitely have a great chance of getting in through their ABSN program rather than BSN. They are known to be rather unpredictable with selecting BSN cohort second degree students for admisson. I heard from a friend this year that they only admitted a very small number of them. The good thing is if you got into Duke, you know you are just as qualified as anyone to get into the UNC's ABSN. My main advice would just be to focus strongly on your essays, including the optional! This is their only way of getting to know you since they don't accept LORs or do interviews. Other than that, I think you should be great and obviously meet the qualifications of getting into any amazing program you desire. Goodluck!

To those of you who have been admitted to the ABSN program,

about how many volunteer hours have you accumulated by the time you applied to ABSN? I am thinking of re-apply and volunteer work is what I should be focused on. Have you all shadowed a nurse as well? Thanks!

I had over 1,300 hours over the last 2 years. I was fortunate though in that my last assignment in the Marine Corps was leading a rehabilitation unit at boot camp. I had to work with Navy medicine daily on the rehab cases so, I clocked hours at the same time shadowing NP and PA friends of mine working on my recruits. I performed more Medical Assistant type duties (rooming patients, taking vitals, patient histories, EKGs, etc) for my direct patient care hours, but also shadowed RNs on occasion in a hospital setting.
