Hi all!
I know its early and the application isn't due until December 1st, but I was wondering if there was anyone else out there applying to the Duke ABSN program to start in August of 2011! I've already read through some of the previous semesters' threads and it seems like a great outlet for discussion/ questions/ nerves!
Let me know :)
Amisadai,
I had the same experience with my application, but fortunately didn't get too upset because I knew that I had no control over the situation at that point. What an experience, though. I sure was glad to get an email from M in the morning saying that she had fixed the problem for me! :)
Like you, I'm glad that Duke is not like the other schools. I feel like they are really trying to choose the students who really want to make a difference in other people's lives. Also, they are intent upon preparing us to be leaders in the health field. I'm excited for you and hope that we both get in. Looking forward to meeting everyone soon. I definitely agree with Oaktown--the area is great. The Duke campus is so beautiful, and there is so much to do.
Aspire,
Definitely agree that there is no need to worry--we can't do anything more than what we've already done at this point. Besides, we'll know pretty quickly anyway.
Regarding CPR/BLS, what exactly is the Duke requirement? Do we need it before we start? I was thinking about taking my CNA and getting CPR certified this summer anyway because the new CPR procedures are so different than the old.
Thanks.
Hello fellow applicants/worrywarts
Does anyone know what the deal is with the recommended pre-req classes? I have to sign up for next semesters classes today, and it's going to be really hard for me to fit in lifespan developement to my schedule. I'm willing to take a night class after work if it'll help my chances of getting in to Duke, but if its recommended more for my own benefit, I'd rather just get the textbook and read about it on my own time.
Anyone got any info/advice?
Thanks!
Hi evaamber,
Full disclosure, I have taken those, but mainly because they were required for some of the other schools that I was applying to and I was interested in the nutrition. However, how I would look at it if I was in your situation is they are recommended, not required. Duke will be making the decision that they want to interview you before you have even set foot in the classroom and based on last year's dates, you will know that you have been accepted by mid February. So I can't see how it could really be that much of a factor in the decision. Will there be other things that you are doing with your time that support your goal of nursing school? From all that I have read (and I have read a lot here on allnurses) it seems like Duke is far more interested in whether or not you are a good fit and not if you have dotted all possible i's and crossed all t's. So I wouldn't worry too much about it and take what you want. My two cents. :)
Hey everyone! I was just wondering whether any of you have taken or plan to take a Medical Terminology course before beginning the ABSN program. I ask because Duke doesn't have this course listed as a requirement and I don't see an actual "Medical Terminology" course listed in the curriculum. Is it an unspoken requirement that we have this, or will we get what we need once we are in the program? Thanks for your responses!
Aspire- that's a good thought but I don't think ill take one over the summer. I feel like medical terminology will just be picked up along the way unless we are specifically told to take a course. Ill probably spend this summer doing continuing education for EMT so I can keep my cert going through nursing school. Then ill have the option of working summers.
Vandymeg - Heck yes! I am extremely excited (and nervous) as well!
Happy Birthday! :hbsmiley: If you graduated in '06 is this birthday the big 2-7? I'll be 27 in June, but I made an announcement that I wasn't going past 26 if I didn't get into nursing school. Let's hope Duke makes our dreams come true!

NoleMercy, thanks so much for the info. Would have called/emailed admissions myself, but I didn't want to bother them during this busy time of the year. Am so excited that the process moves along so quickly because Duke is the only place I've applied.
Hope to hear from them soon, one way or the other. Everyone I met there was so encouraging (especially M and everyone in admissions, but I also met someone who was cleaning the building, and she was very encouraging too.). After visiting, I didn't really want to go anyplace else.
