Duke ABSN Fall 2011

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all!

I know its early and the application isn't due until December 1st, but I was wondering if there was anyone else out there applying to the Duke ABSN program to start in August of 2011! I've already read through some of the previous semesters' threads and it seems like a great outlet for discussion/ questions/ nerves!

Let me know :)

Millennium hotel. I think that it's just a mile away.

Aspire2inspire,

Thanks for sharing this site. I am definitely looking to maximize financial resources. My notes say that we should complete the 2011/12 FAFSA on or after Jan. 1, 2011. One of my friends said to submit as early as possible before the federal funds run out for the year. (You probably already know this because you haven't been out of school long, I think.)

Hey everyone!

I know we're still coming down from the high of being invited to the interview, but have any of you began thinking of the financial side of the school process? I know I am because I am already carrying undergrad debt, and I want to maximize scholarship resources as much as possible! Anyway, I was browsing the net and came across this link http://noedb.org/library/features/101-little-known-scholarships-for-nurses I'm going to check it out and see what these scholarships are about, and if any of you find anything interesting, please share :)

Oaktown,

I am sad to hear that your references did not come through. My heart goes out to you.

Norma

Nikki164,

I am definitely planning on doing the ABSN-MSN Pathway. That is one of the major reasons I want to go to Duke. So many great programs are available at Duke. I just don't know exactly what I want to do yet--there's too much to choose from. I'm assuming that clarity will come to me as I go through the ABSN program.

What are your interests?

Norma

... are you guys planning on doing the ABSN-MSN Pathway??

Marann1234,

Welcome to the forum. I appreciate the info you posted. I'm amazed that so many people applied for the Fall 2011 cohort. At the Nursing Information Session, I believe they told us that usually 220 people apply, 125 are invited to campus, and 115 are offered admission to fill the 72 seats available.

Norma

I just received a response from the admissions department about the applicant pool. 420 people applied for Fall 2011 and 160 people received interviews. So many more applicants than previous years. I wonder if they'll admit more students.

Wow!

So glad I found this thread! I'm going in for my interview January 28 and I am super nervous!

Good luck to everyone!

Ocennia,

Welcome! Glad to see you on the loop. I was extremely pleased when I found the site last year. Did you read through the messages from the previous classes? Will you have to travel far for the interview?

Regarding the interview, you obviously have what it takes to flourish at Duke academically, otherwise you wouldn't have been selected for an interview. According to my notes, their major questions are whether you are a good fit for the program and whether the program a good fit for you. Also, why do you want to be a nurse?

There was one more general question I wrote down, but I can't recall it at this time. I'm sure you will do great--everyone I met was very pleasant and answered all my questions completely. It will probably be the same at the interviews.

Norma

Hi Everyone!

I booked my hotel with priceline.com by bidding on 3 1/2 star hotel and it ended up being for te Millennium Hotel for $50/night. The regular price is supposedly $82/night. That was the best deal I could find. I thought I would just share it with everyone.

Hi Norma,

That's what I thought too, about 200 applying. I wonder why so many more people applied this year. I feel so fortunate to get an interview! It makes me nervous that they're interviewing so many people but filling the same number of slots.

I'm still deciding if I want to do the ABSN-MSN path. Being able to apply after being accepted into the program is another reason I'm so attracted to Duke.

What made you decide to do this path? I'm worried about not having the clinical skills needed to be an advanced practice nurse. I know that eventually I want to get a MSN. I guess I just need to talk to more people about it. Many people I've talked to have discouraged me about doing the combined program (a 3-year program was my original plan). Most of these people don't know anything about the programs.. so I don't know. HA anyway I'll stop rambling.

Anyone else have thoughts on the ABSN-MSN path?

Amanda - looks like we're at the same hotel and same interview date. I'm sure we'll recognize each other unless we were both being secretly clever with our user names. :)

Evaamber- Hahaha!! I think we'll be able to figure it out! I look forward to meeting you! I am so nervous about this interview it's terrible....

Hey Guys!

I'm late to the party, but I wanted to say "Hey!" to all of my potential future classmates! I'm interviewing on the 21st. Duke is my first choice, there are a few others I'll apply to, but nothing I'm as excited about as Duke!

DH and I are driving over on Thursday, and then staying the weekend to explore Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill.

What are you planning on wearing for the interview? I'm thinking a simple suit?

I look forward to meeting some of you in January!!

Rachel
