Duke ABSN Fall 2014 Hopefuls

U.S.A. North Carolina

I applied to the Duke SON ABSN program for the Fall of 2014. Anyone else out there who is applying for the same cohort? I saw that last year, the applicants got their interview/Duke Days letters at the end of January... hopefully we'll hear back soon! Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone,

I too have been accepted into the fall 2014 cohort, and have decided to attend. I have been reading the thread for a couple months now, and finally have a question I can't seem to find an answer to-- I received notice of my financial aid package via email, but see nothing about the "need based" scholarship awarded by DUSON (only federal subsidized/unsubsidized and outside lender amounts). Does this mean I will not receive that assistance? Or do they send that out separately?

If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the help! I'm very excited and look forward to meeting you all in the fall. :)

If you received it should be included. It's $5K for the first year. I know one of the older threads posted a letter from the Financial Aid office that basically implied your EFC on the FAFSA pretty much had to be 0 to get the need based scholarship.

Has anyone else find any apartments they are interested in? Lol...I am trying to make a list of possible apartments.

I know on the FB group we had several people post sublets or available apartments to rent. Duke also provided us the following links which you should get when the Sakai site opens up for you. It may be a bit early to start truly looking. Research carefully, we've had some in cohort already looking to move. Many do take advantage of the Duke bus system or the Data Buses (which are free for students, get a GoPass).

Another random question about your schedules as students...do any of you have pets? And if so, is it hard to maintain them with the program?

We have quite a few who do have pets. It probably helps if you have a roommate. I'm not sure what their plans will be the second semester when the 13 hour clinical days start (plus commute time).

Thank you for the help. I am going to be in Durham for the summer, so I wanted to kind of get an idea of what is available to me.

@Melissa. As other students have said, it really boils down to what would work best for you. Every nursing program will have their pros and cons and you have to decide what nursing program can offer what you are looking for. I am not in an amazing financial position and no matter where I go in-state or out-state, I will be taking out loans. So, I just had to look at what I wanted and what was being offered to me and if it was worth it. At the end of the day, go with the program that seems the best fit for you and also the one that will get you to be the nurse you want to be.

Does anybody know when they're going to do second-round admits? Did those of you who have already been accepted have a deposit deadline or something like that? I'm trying to get a feel for when I might know something.

I think the deadline is April 10, so there will probably be another round of acceptances later this month.

I'm having trouble getting loans for the program. Finding funding for this program isn't easy to say the least. Anyone have any loans that worked for them that I should look into?

@futureRN....did you try all the private lenders on the list that Duke gave you?

Hey guys.... I have made the painful decision to decline my admissions offer because of finances. Hope someone on the wait list can get my spot. Good luck to you all. I'm hoping to get into the University of Maryland which would be much easier on my pockets with in state tuition.

Just declined my offer of admission as well. Good luck to those on the waitlist!

@futureRN....I am sad that I won't see this Fall but I wish you much success at University of Maryland

After a long decision process, I've decided to attend Hopkins... Good luck to all of you on the wait list!
