DUI's & Licensure

Nurses General Nursing

Published

OK Here goes. Ten years ago I got two DUI's. Now I'm pretty sure that those two won't affect me with licensure as long as I petition the boards effectively.

Just yesterday I found out that I was accepted to a ADN Nursing School.

New problem on July 4th I got a DUI again. This legally only counts as my 1st DUI but I know the boards will see it as my third and most recent and at the time I would potentially take the NCLEX this DUI will only be 18 months old. This new DUI will not affect me getting into school because they don't know about it and I don't think I should tell them until it gets close to the end.

I have been waiting for three years to get into this school and I think I may have just screwed myself. Does anyone think I have a chance of taking the NCLEX and working? I don't want to waste the money if there is no chance. I haven't heard of anyone in my shoes and I just need some advice so I can go on with my life RN or not.

it sounds like it might just be way too ugly with the death stuff and all that. I hate looking at dead people like at funerals and stuff. I probably would get the willys cartin' some carcass off to the morgue not to mention all the blood and poop and phlegm and stuff.....

Definately sounds like you need to reconsider.

Good luck.

I personally cannot belive why people would drink and drive when there are other alternatives. There really is no excuse for these kinds of things. And I don't know how American things run down there, so I guess I'm no help!

I'm thinking about just shining the whole nursing thing because it sounds like it might just be way too ugly with the death stuff and all that. I hate looking at dead people like at funerals and stuff. I probably would get the willys cartin' some carcass off to the morgue not to mention all the blood and poop and phlegm and stuff.

I think that's a good idea. With your 3 DUI record and instability, nursing school is NOT the place for you. FIRST and FOREMOST you need to get your life in order (stop the drinking, stop the denial, blame shifting, etc).

This poster MUST be a sad joke, with all of his/her compassion  nursing dosn't sound like the right career for you,I know I would not want you to take care of me or my family.

I guarantee that if you go to dinner and drink three glasses of wine you could get a DUI but does that make you a bad person?

YES, it does. Driving while impaired for any reason at any time is an act of ultimate selfishness. NO one ever HAS to drive and drive.

No one, ever.

And it really is as simple as that. You have, on THREE occasions in your life, been caught acting with with complete disregard for human life. Driving while impaired is no different from firing a loaded gun in public. You may not hit someone the first time, or the second or third, but eventually someone's life is going to be destroyed.

Personally, I think you never should have been given the chance to get a third DUI, your licence should have been revoked permanently after the second. Obviously you did not learn from your second and you are showing no remorse over the third. You only regret having been caught and having your dream of becoming a nurse challenged.

If you even are allowed to enter nursing school, I really hope that you get some help beforehand. You say you have the "gene"- alcholism is a disease, and while it can't be cured, it can be treated. Get help, regardless.

I speak from experience- sobriety is enlightening.

I never thought you were an ass! In fact I would venture to say you probably are a really good person. I just feel you should step back, slow down and face this situation in a more concrete way. Don't fix the problem with a bandaid just to get into nursing school. Face this whole mess head on the RIGHT way. Many hours of therapy, hard work at community service (preferably in an area that snaps you into attention with the devastation that alcohol can cause) a homeless shelter, a nursing home, etc etc. Do not give up and hang your head like a lost wounded puppy. Get some brass nuguts and fight for your dream. Just do do it in a strong sensible smart way. Do it the right way.......cut the wishy washy remarks as well (not funny) we do a whole hell of a lot more for these patients than can ever be put into words besides some day if you don't stop drinking and driving you could be the carcass on the cart that we are cleaning up the phlegm, poop, and vomit off of. food-smiley-023.gif

sbn8tv:

- Been reading through this thread and thinking about what my response would be.

- I think you are one selfish little b*tch/b*stard who should have their rear-end hung in jail for the next 50 years. There... I said it !!!

- First, don't even think about being a nurse. You have a problem and need to get help.

- You won't even make it through A&P 101 without getting boozed up some night. Will you drive home that night? Who knows? Not even you know.

- You will NEVER make it through nursing school. You are taking a seat from someone who might have.

- Personally, I hope the judge throws the book at you. I hope you do jail time, I hope the nursing school throws you the hell out, I hope you never are allowed to drive again, and I hope you damned well never become a nurse.

- You are a danger to both yourself and society.

-----

- I drove a tractor-trailer for 5 years. I've personally seen what happens when you drink and drive. It's not only the nurses on this board that have to deal with drunk drivers.

-----

I'd like to tell you a story:

- I saw one day on US-22 near Blairsville, PA, where a group of drunk teenagers get "T-Boned" by a loaded coal truck. The coal truck was about 1/4 mile in front of me... I was following behind. Had a load of auto parts out of Chicago, IL.

- I saw the VW Beetle racing out towards the highway wondering how the hell they were going to stop in time.

- Next think I know, there was a big bang -- metal flying everywhere. Me standing on the brakes. The coal truck going out through a field.

- When I got stopped --- it takes forever to stop a 40 ton rig...

- I saw the blood running down the street. The mangled corpses in the wreckage. You wouldn't even know they were human beings.

- Saw the beer cans/bottles all over the car. Looks like they had just been to the beer distributer as there were several cases in the back.

- The guy driving the coal rig actually did wet himself - and was shaking so bad it looked like he was having seizures. He was the only one the ambulance crew could help.

- I too was shaking -- hell I am shaking now as I write this.

- What was supposed to be an enjoyable weekend for me and my family (I was about 50 miles from Altoona, PA (home)- hauling a load from Chicago over to NYC) --- turned into a major nightmare.

- Took the cops about 8 hours to clean the mess up.

----

- Yeah, I still wake up somenights thinking about it. I can't imagine what the coal truck driver in front of me must be going through. And this occured 12 or 13 years ago in 1989.

- Although I was fortunate on that day not to have hit the VW, I have been hit 3 times by drunk/stoned drivers during my 5 year trucking career. Fortunately, no one was hurt (don't know how) in any of those accidents.

- Without getting into a personal attack on you...

- Think about how utterly selfish you are. You need to seriously reconsider your life and get your act together.

- A DUI -- 1st, 2nd, and now a 3rd one is not something you just blow off and say "oops".

- Sure, it took courage (I guess) to post your story here. You wanted advice...well you got it.

-----

- Finally, note that I actually signed my name to my post!!! Yes, I am a real person and yes this really is me!!!!!

Welcome to the real world!

I notice that sbn8tv says he isn't going to "drink and drive anymore."

LOL

Wouldn't you think he would have the brains to write:

"I'M NOT GOING TO DRINK ANYMORE !"

Hey, that same thought occurred to me passing thru.

My best friend in college was killed by a drunk driver who had numerous DUI's . . . he dragged my friend and my friend's motorcycle for a block before noticing he hit him. My friend's parents turned off life support the next day.

I have no sympathy for people who do this. Palesarah is right . . . no one HAS TO DRINK AND DRIVE. There is just no excuse.

And if you are so irresponsible to do so . .then you need to stop drinking alcohol COMPLETELY.

Peace

Yes I smoke.

But I don't smoke and drive.

Seriously -- this whole thing will take some time for you to comprehend, right now you are a kid who is sorry cuz he got caught, not for what he did.

Good you realize it's an addiction like smoking. Just keep going, beyond that.
