Drug testing for preemployment

Published

Hi everyone, I am a new grad nurse and recently got hired. I took 200 mg of Ibuprofen a week ago for a headache and have a drug urine test tomorrow . Is it possible they may detect ibuprofen in my urine? I saw sources online say that ibuprofen and other OTC medications can result in a false positive-result test. This could be me just overthinking.

Yes. You are overthinking it. It's ibuprofen.

Haha yes I figured I was overthinking. I saw somewhere online that said ibuprofen can trigger a false-positive result for THC, barbiturates and PCP that’s why I was wondering.

200 mg Ibuprofen seems like a pretty small dose for an adult.

Yes it does - I take 600mg twice daily for chronic pain.

If ibuprofen tested false positive, there wouldn't be a lot of people passing their drug tests, since it is so commonly used.

Their are some people who have had false positives for THC and benzos after taking large doses of Ibuprophen. Thus the paranoia among persons in monitoring!

False positives happen for a lot of meds.

If your UDS comes up positive, a sample is sent for gas chromatography which is definitive.

And you'll never know about it.

Relax.

It's interesting because at least in CA the lab will have someone call you if there was a problem with your uds also above info.

Beware of Dr. Google. You will learn to despise him when your patients argue with you because Google says so.
