Dropping out of Nursing School - help!

Published

Hi, I am currently enrolled at a community college in the Bay Area. The program is a complete joke. They are just weeding us out. It is surreal. I am a straight-A student, a major over-achiever and I study non-stop. I already have a bachelor's degree. My mom is a nurse manager and thinks the program is unstable and run poorly. I didn't pass the first exam (80% of the class didn't, with the other 20% just barely passing it). I want to get out and apply elsewhere for next year. My education is too important to me and my nursing future is at stake here.

My question:

Do nursing schools frown on "Withdrawals" from previous nursing schools on your transcript? I have until the end of the day to drop out without a W appearing on my transcript!

Thanks for the advice and support.

Specializes in LTC, wound care.

Nursetobe,

Please please please put a post about this instructor on www.ratemyprofessor.com

The reason, is that maybe some people could be spared a quarter's tuition, and a wasted year to find out what you did.

It's such a damn shame that people are so scared of things that can totally keep them from learning and practicing their chosen career....and that there are just enough fickle and bad instructors that mess it up for everyone else. I just find that I keep thinking of my advice to others when I read threads is to keep your head down and just get your degree. Then, and only then would you feel free to say what you really feel. It's just such a shame that this is going on at that school.

You were brave to get the heck out of there. Best of luck selecting another school.

Since you have a Bachelor's already may-be you can get into an accelerated Bachelor's program. At my school they start in January and because it is self funded there is still open spots. It is more expensive up front but it is only 18 months long instead of the three years. I know there is a Cal State in your area. Good Luck!! and smart move!!

Specializes in heart failure and prison.

All nursing schools have a weed out process. Hang in their, it's only your 1st exam. I no students who have failed the 1st exam and they are doing well now. I have failed the 1st exam and one my exams, the entire class failed. Because you are not sure of how the testing is done, sometimes you fail. Now if you start failing all of the exams, then drop out. But I say give it a chance, hang in their.

Specializes in Interested in ER, L&D, Surg/Med.

hey

i would definintely withdrawl if i were you. it is a good reason, and i believe as long as you explain the situation to your new school, and seeing that your grades and GPA are really good, you shouldnt have to worry about a 'W'

i would just get out of there and apply somewhere else so you can get yoru degree and get a better education

Wow, that sounds really bad. I think they do look bad on people dropping out. I dropped out, but for different reasons. I just couldn't deal with working in the clinical setting. I guess I am just not cut out to be a nurse. I hope that everything worked out for you!!!=) I've been trying to organize my life now that I'm not in school anymore. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with myself now that I have all this free time from not being in nursing school. Did you end up finishing your program somewhere else?
