Dropping out of Nursing School - help!

Hi, I am currently enrolled at a community college in the Bay Area. The program is a complete joke. They are just weeding us out. It is surreal. I am a straight-A student, a major over-achiever and I study non-stop. I already have a bachelor's degree. My mom is a nurse manager and thinks the program is unstable and run poorly. I didn't pass the first exam (80% of the class didn't, with the other 20% just barely passing it). I want to get out and apply elsewhere for next year. My education is too important to me and my nursing future is at stake here.

My question:

Do nursing schools frown on "Withdrawals" from previous nursing schools on your transcript? I have until the end of the day to drop out without a W appearing on my transcript!

Take the 'W' instead of a failure. You can be honest and explain what happened and your reasons for doing it at the new school. If it's a good program with good people they'll understand. Your transcript should speak to the type of student you are. Good luck.

I don't know about other nursing school, but I know that with traditional college classes a W is always better than an F.

I would think it is the same for a special program such as nursing.

I know that a lot of nursing schools do this, why I don't know but a few of us don't have all the proper books for the up coming semesters because they didn't order enough for the entire class, figuring that so many would drop out or fail out by then.

Our school is a good school, but I don't think they want us to fail, but they all want their NCLEX pass rates to stay up there, so they weed out the ones who can't take those kind of tests (my theory) lol.

the thing about a "w" is that other schools only know why you had to withdraw and that is a good thing since you can tell them any story you like. however, most nursing schools know what the others are doing and other schools are probably aware that the one you are dropping out of has a high failure rate and why. if there is any way to totally not report even going to this nursing school on future applications i'd do that.

Oh dear. I'd withdraw if I were you. It's too bad there are a whole bunch of victims who won't realize that they, also, should withdraw and go elsewhere.

It's too bad there isn't a site where comments similar to http://www.ratemyprofessor.com are, except for nursing schools.

Take the W instead of risking an F. A year to wait for nursing isn't as bad as likely not getting to another program.

And make sure you do pick another nursing school to go to, its a shame that nursing schools like that are still going on.

Have you considered applying for a BSN program? The ones in the Bay Area are very competitive to get into, but they generally base it on GPA especially on the prerequisites, and the TEAS test. I currently attend CSUEB and although the competition to get in is crazy, once you are in you have a pretty decent chance you will make it through the program. Now I have had a lot of people complain to me that they are an A students and they are now getting B's and C's, but at least they are passing.

We have lost a few, but the majority are passing. Knock on wood!!

Oh wow I am applying to BSN programs as well as ABSN programs at the community colleges in the bay area next month. I hope I dont end up at that school.:cry:

Thanks everyone, for your support. It really helped. I did drop out yesterday so will have absolutely nothing on my record...if I had waited another day it would have been a W, a few more weeks, possibly an F.

I am going to start applying for other schools.

To the person concerned about what school it is, don't worry it is an Associate's Degree program at a junior college (not BSN or ABSN), so you have nothing to worry about.

Congratulations, it's not easy to make a 180 in your career path like that, but from the sound of it, it was the right decision. I hope you get into a great school!!
