Drexel University FNP Fall 2014

Published

Hi everyone, I couldn't find a thread for Drexel FNP fall 2014 so I figured I would start one so we can all meet/chat ahead of time. I'm currently living in the DC area and I'm excited to be visiting Philly a few times a year. Anyone else out there find out yet?

And yes the curriculum plan is rough! You are going to need some flexibility with your work schedule when you hit your track specific pharm class. You will need a lot of flexibility once you hit clinicals. You are going to have class one night a week plus doing about 16 hours of clinicals....and clinicals happen on your preceptors schedule (you really can't make demands).

Oh and you will be on campus for 2-3 days once each quarter once you start clinicals. Each track goes at a different time...so that's 2-3 days you can't work.

Are you or have you been following the recommended 36 month plan? Are the quarters with two classes manageable? What have you found to be the hardest class/easiest class? I heard that financial aid doesn't count you as full time unless you have at least 4.5 credits per quarter. Is this true?

I am doing the curriculum as it is laid out for my track (tracks are pretty much identical) plus taking an extra 3 credit class for 3 quarters to ensure financial aid...you need 4.5 credits for aid. There are 3 quarters without enough credits....one quarter I was short .5 credits because of a 3 credit course and a 1 credit course. So I took yet another 3 credit course totaling 7 credits for that quarter.

The quarters are manageable...rough at times but doable if you recognize you have to give some stuff up.

Hardest class was my track specific pharm class and I think many struggled there. The advanced assessment class was honestly not that bad. There was a lot to know...but the material felt easier even with needing to know a lot. The first year of classes a bit of a blur. Lol. The pathophys class is a little rough....be prepared to learn everything. The advanced pharm class was similar to pathophys...need to know your stuff but great instructor.

Another hard part...finding preceptors. It has proven to be a lot of work....be prepared to spend a lot of time working on this unless you are lucky.

Irish, thanks for all your insight and advice. You have been extremely helpful. I hope classes are going well for you.

I haven't heard anything from Drexel yet. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad...

Do you have to come to campus at all before the year you start clinicals? I have a hotel all picked out near campus for when the time comes =)

Which program track did you apply to?

I applied for the Psych NP cohort and have been wait listed since March. I continue to check the website on a daily basis. Not sure how much longer I'll have to wait!!

For those accepted, is there an introduction day or anything like that? I thought I saw it somewhere online, but not sure if it applies to us at all....Also, anyone on facebook and want to friend?

Hi! I also start the Drexel Family NP Program this fall and I did get an email recently saying there's something Aug 9 at Drexel for Accepted Students. Of course it's my weekend to work. =/ Going to try to see if I can get off though. For anyone else starting in the Fall I am def interested in keeping in touch with people! As someone said (I think somewhere in this thread) if anyone wants to keep in touch on here or through email or FB I am all for it!

When I started at Drexel there was some massive orientation. I went to it. Honestly...if it is the same thing it wasn't that great. There were so many people and most seemed to be on campus students. I wouldn't go crazy trying to get there.

I will be on vacation in Florida while the Accepted Students day is going on, or i would have tried to make it. I also missed the online Orientation they had this past Tuesday b/c I had to work @ 1900 (It was scheduled from 1800 - 2000) Did anyone else "attend" the online program? The advisor said they will be posting a link next week for those who missed it to watch the video and gather info.
