Double Dip CE Education Credits?

Published

Hello Everybody

Quick question I'm wondering if you know about. I'm a nurse in Texas but I'm also license in California. I'm in the process of obtaining my CE credits for Texas but I wondering, do you know if I can double dip and use the same CE credits for California as well? I would also like to keep my california license active.

Thanks!

I believe as long as they are approved by both boards...yes.

CEs are CEs, why would they care? or even know?

If you will review Rule 216 of the Texas NPA you will learn what is and is not acceptable. There is no stipulation about using the CNE for other certification. In fact, many do. It has to be related to your area of nursing practice and meet other criteria, such as not being basic knowledge, or lay person courses, or self-improvement, etc. The only issue I have is that California does not use the ANCC criteria, which is required by Texas. So be careful that the objectives and content match Rule 216.

It is possible that a State could randomly audit a nurse (for whatever reason), much like IRS can do random audits. And if you fell within the sample audited population, you most likely would have to produce evidence of your course completion. And courses would need to meet that State's criteria. It's the law.

I vaguely recall not too long ago here on AN, a nurse was being audited for her CEUs. Don't remember any details. But it can happen.

Look at it this way. Infection control = IC = IC no matter where you go. Or DM, or ABGs, or CM, or anything else.

Of course your CEUs are good anywhere their provider is accepted by a BoN or a certification board. All their good mojo doesn't go away after being submitted somewhere. There's nothing preventing you from using them for another one. :)That's not double-dipping, that's proving that you took a course to many different entities.

You are right, but what I meant was, why would a BON care if you used the same CEUs, for more than one state. My BON simply says I have to keep records for a specific number of years, and we have random audits; at which time you have to show proof. Nothing asks if I submitted them anywhere else. I'm always careful to check that mine are acceptable to my state's regs.
