Don't Let Adelphi Steal Your Money

Published

For those applying to Adelphi University's nursing program (Traditional and Accelerated), their site does not state this, but they will not look at your application if you have a biology or chemistry course with a grade that is a C or lower.

It doesn't have to be a prerequisite course like it states on the site. When I called to ask why I was rejected even before completing my application, they said it was because I had a C in Physical Chemistry, a course that's not even a prerequisite. They told me that any student with a C or lower in ANY Chemistry or Biology class won't be evaluated.

The information that they told me on the phone and on the website seemed pretty misleading. I felt like I satisfied all the requirements, and they didn't even evaluate me. It seems like they put certain information on their website to get people to apply, and pay that $40 application fee. Then, they make up extra requirements that make people ineligibile, and act like you were supposed to know about it.

I am applying to the Nursing program at adelphi and reading this post slightly discouraged me from applying. How did they reject you before you applied?

@school408 i dont think she means they rejected her before she applied. there are basic standards you have to meet before it goes to the next step in evaluating. someone had to start evaluating to notice the c or lower grade in chemistry. but thats the very beginning stages of evaluating and once thats not met the process stops immediately. i think her issue is the site isn't clear on what science courses cant have a c or lower, pre reqs or any science course you've taken in college. i have a bs in biology so of course i have far more science courses than whats required, but they would take all my science courses into account even though they have specific pre reqs required for the course. heres what the site says directly "[color=#333333]have no more than one prerequisite science grade lower than c+, and successfully pass the teas (test of essential academic skills) the acceptable grade for a transfer of science credits is a c+ or better."

That is so annoying and I would be upset too. Maybe you should follow up with them and ask why they didn't clarify that on their website. I hope you applied elsewhere.

Interesting perspective. I felt the same way when dealing with another program. I was qualified when they took my application fee, but "became" "disqualified" when different criteria were published on the website later. When I talked to admissions people about this discrepancy, they kept giving me a litany of how "competitive" their program is and how different "criteria" can be applied to individual applications. Yeah, you got the money either way and now you don't have to do anything with my application. Thanks for nothing but a waste of my time and hard-earned money. I think in the corporate world this is considered a form of bait and switch, supposedly illegal.

Their website says "no more than one prerequisite science class with a grade lower than a C+." So is that not true - can you not apply even if you have one that is a C, but everything else a B- and up?

It all depends on who is applying to the program. If they have a high number of qualifying candidates then they can choose to be more selective. Now if they were struggling to get people into the program they would accept everyone and anyone who applied, but that is obviously not the case.

^^^ Now that being the case I would have never thought that Adelphi would be that competitive, but then again it is a moderately priced private school, they do use TEAS scores and it has high recognition within NY state.

Try Molloy (they take everyone) and Drexel (the application is free).

I actually graduated from Adelphi in 2006. with a BA in something else, although i started off in nursing.. Adelphi does have an excellent nursing program and i have many friends that have went there and they all got jobs right after they graduated in many well known hospitals in NY. I now live in PA and most nursing schools are that way, some have even more requirements than Adelphi. I dont think its unreasonable. like any other school you have to do your research...
