Don't know what to do! Help or advice welcome!

Nurses General Nursing

Hello Everyone! I have a little dilemma going on and I need some advice!

First let me give some background information on myself...

I graduated with a BA in liberal studies last year. I worked for the rest of the year and then realized that I wanted to go back to school and become a nurse. So I went to my local CC and met with an adviser. We went through my transcripts from my college and she told me what pre-reqs I needed to take for a RN program.

Currently, I only have 2 classes to go and then I'm done with all my pre-reqs! Woo-Hoo!

Anyway, one day I was looking at some programs and I saw that a grade of "C-" was not acceptable! Knowing that I had 2 C-'s in 2 of the pre-req classes (sociology 1 and critical thinking) I started to worry and somewhat panic. I had taken those 2 general ed. classes back in 2002 during my freshman year and didn't think too much of them. Actually, I was being a rather poor student back then and I didn't think about how it would later affect me.

Well, I made an appointment with an adviser at my CC and she said I couldn't re-take those courses since I did not fail them since I passed it with a C-. In order to fail them and be allowed to re-take those two classes I would have needed a D or an F. So now here I am and I have found this accelerated BSN program but those 2 C-'s are considered failing grades but I don't know how I'd be able to re-take them! I really don't know what to do now! I am also planning on applying to other CC's for the ADN program but then I have a feeling those 2 C-'s are going to haunt me and since I can't retake those courses, I really don't know what to do! HELP! :o

I have found that most, I probably should not say most, some advisers do not actually know much about the subject that they are advising on. Talk to a different adviser about retaking those classes because I have not heard that you can not retake unless you fail them. I know people that retook classes that they got B's in because they really needed the A. Good luck in getting a better grade the next time you take those classes.

It doesn't make sense that you're not allowed to retake those classes. If you register for a class/pay for it, you should be able to take it as many times as you wish. I agree with ukstudent; talk to another advisor or the chair of the nursing program. Community colleges are usually very helpful in helping students through their programs. They want a high graduation percentage and they want your money. Not letting you retake a couple classes is to their detriment as well as yours.

I agree, talk with someone else. I don't think the adviser knows what she's talking about.

Also, I think admissions committees understand the "I was a freshman and acting 18" scenario very well. They are going to look a lot more closely at your recent prerequisites, particularly things like A&P or Micro, than they are at your older, more general education classes. I recently talked with a friend who teaches in an ADN program and asked her that very question, just out of curiosity.

It may not be that you can't retake them, but that you don't need to. I'd ask someone else and try to get a definitive answer. While you may be willing to retake those two classes, you may not need to, and why waste the time and money if you don't have to?

(And, as the mother of a 17 year old, somehow I'm not surprised that a college freshman might not do well in a critical thinking class!!!):lol2:

if you absolutely find out that you have to retake them, i would try going to a different community college and just signing up for them (if they are easily transferable to your current CC). just act like a new student. i've done it before and it's worked out fine. just make sure they're transferable first.

Agree with other posters, talk to another advisor, one who has been at college for awhile, or better, the head of the program. If you pay for a class, can get it scheduled accordingly, I see no reason to be told you cannot retake a class. Plenty of people do it everyday. Maybe this advisor was afraid you would not do well again and get an even lower grade. No insult intended, just a thought.

Check with the program you are going into - the BSN program. While the passing grade in my nursing school was 80% (B), I was given credit for classes I took at another university in which I got a C. I recieved the credit, but the old grade didn't count against my nursing school GPA.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I went ahead and spoke to someone else at my CC and she said it wouldn't be a problem re-taking those 2 classes since I didn't take them there. So I've just re-arranged my schedule and added those two classes. Now I think I'm going to call the advising office of the BSN program and double check with them. I just want to cover all my bases! Thanks for the input everyone! Wish me luck!!

HI THERE! I GRADUATED FROM A 4 YEAR SCHOOL BACK IN 2004. I'VE NOW DECIDED TO GO BACK FROM NURSING, ANYHOO....FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I HAVE TAKEN SOME CLASSES MORE THAN ONCE EITHER I MADE A "D" OR "C" & WANTED TO DO BETTER. YOU SHOULD LOOK INTO THE SCHOOL'S REPEAT POLICY FOR CLASSES. THE WAY IT WORKED AT MY 4 YEAR SCHOOL WAS:

REPEAT FOR A 2ND TIME THAT GRADE WOULD REPLACE YOUR FIRST GRADE, TAKE IT A 3RD TIME THEN ALL 3 GRADES WOULD BE AVERAGED. I THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO LOOK AT SOME OTHER SCHOOLS. I PLAN ON APPLYING TO MORE THAN ONE MYSLEF. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.

GOOD LUCK!!

You were given incorrect advice. As mentioned above, there are people that retake courses because they got a "B or C" and wanted a better grade to get into a grad school program. And that is even if they are at the same school.

Glad to hear that you are retaking those courses. Best of luck to you.
