I have 6 dogs, yes 6. Well right now my one is in heat and my black lab mix does not like it because she is the alpha dog. Well they got into it hot and heavy, my son ran out of his room and I ran down the stairs to break it up. I have always taught my son to grab the tail and separate them. Well he didn't and he got bite. Got him on the right wrist area, puncture bite. It bled pretty bad. I grabbed his arm put it up in the air and ran up the stairs, wrapped it in a towel and held pressure for like 5 minutes, but while I was holding pressure he decided to have a seizure on me. His eyes went back in his head and he got real stiff, and I could see he was struggling to take a breath, didn't last long, about 1 minute. He came out of it, he did urinate and was embarrassed about that.My son is "20" and he has done this about 4 other times. When he gets afraid he goes into this seizure. I told the doctors when he was young about it, matter of fact one time it was in the hospital after he got a tetorifice injection. They all seemed to ignore it.
I just know the Mom in me was going nuts inside, but the Nurse in me kept my cool and handled it.
I cleaned the wound and applied wound dressing. But it seems to keep bleeding thru. He has no insurance so I think Im going to get some liquid band-aid and give it a try. It is a puncture and its swollen and bruised, but he refuses to go to the ED.
So anybody else have some "horror" stories about their kids getting hurt?

i have 7 (small) dogs. i have been bit a couple of times when the dogs got into an alpha type fight. they didn't mean to bite me, they didn't even actually bite each other, my hand happened to get in the way. stupid me.
i could tell you he needs to go to the ed but you already know that. no insurance is a sad state in america. anyway, realistically, keep it really clean, use steri-strips rather than liquid band-aid. i can tell you from experience it doesn't work and it really burns. it's not the same as the ed uses. swelling and bruising should take care of itself. ouch.
worse comes to worse you could take him to a "doc in the box" for an antibiotic rx.

Wow. Umm... you can't use Liquid Bandaid on a puncture wound. He needs to be seen by a doc, especially since it's bleeding through. Go to a doc in the box if he won't go to an ER. He needs to be seen.
You might also consider spaying/neutering your dogs. Also, NEVER stick a hand in the middle of a dog fight (even by the tail).
Sorry you're having a bad day.

Do you have a kennel permit to be keeping six dogs in one household?
Your son should be seen. I hope he does not get an infection.

Ok....the human mouth is one of the dirtiest places in the body....probably more than you know.....lots of bar fight detox admits get put on antibiotics for this. Occasionally, cellulitis develops. So, what do you think about a dog's mouth? Seriously, he needs to go be seen. a doc in the box, a simple dr visit with explaination of inability to pay, etc. Also, why does he not have insurance? Has he applied for assistance?
Hope he's ok, and that seizure history needs to be investigated. The person in me hopes all is well...but the nurse in me is telling me to get him on some assistance and get things checked out. If he's struggling to take a breath, what happens if he stops breathing during a seizure?

call me dense if you must but i see no reason why having 6 dogs in your house should require a kennel?
i hope he doesn't get an infection either. i do think a "doc in the box" is appropriate and affordable. at least for mom.
the 20 year old boy does not have insurance. do we know how much money is in his bank account? are we going to take up a collection to pay his medical bills?
also, why does he not have insurance? has he applied for assistance? because he lives in america, and if he has a job, his employer likely is not obligated to provide the opportunity to buy health insurance. i don't think we need to be questioning why he doesn't have insurance. if he's struggling to take a breath, what happens if he stops breathing during a seizure?

cpr + 911 the same thing i would do if one of my loved one's quits breathing at home during a seizure or for any other conditon.

Thanks to all who have posted here. I'm sorry this happened to the OP and her son.
Unfortunately, it's beyond the scope of practice of a nursing message board to offer medical or legal advice, and there are both medical AND legal issues here---not only for the OP's son, who had an apparent seizure and received dog bite injuries, but for the OP herself for having so many dogs in a single dwelling.
I would ask the OP to have her son seen by an MD or nurse practitioner, and to check her city's laws regarding the number of dogs an individual can keep. (Where I live, a homeowner can only have 2 dogs on their property at a given time unless they apply for a special kennel license.)
Closing this thread now.......sorry.
