Hi, I'm an ADN nurse thinking about joining the STRAP program which will give me a monthly stipend to go back to school for my BSN. Does anyone know if there are any stipulations about getting your BSN online while in the STRAP program? I was considering University of Phoenix online because then I would be able to keep my job while receving STRAP stipend and start digging myself out of a financial hole. My plan is to go fulfill my time on active duty once I complete the BSN so I can get up to 120,000 toward loans. Any suggestions would very appreciated! Thanku

I was told that I could not use the STRAP for an online program. At the time I joined...only 5 months ago... you could only use the STRAP if you planned on going into the reserves. I heard somewhere that that has either changed, or may be changing in the future.
its true atleast from my recruiters words, that STRAP is a reserves program. However, once you have your BSN you do have the option to do a new contract to fulfill your reserves owed time on active duty. The benefit to this is currrent offer of 30,000 for BSN nurses and then up to 120,000 paid back in student loans over 4 yrs. I really want to do the online though! I think I might skip STRAP get the BSN on my own then join active and have them pay it all back for me!!

I would double check the part of "being able to fulfill my reserves strap obligation on active duty". I know of another person who has a "strap obligation" and can not go active duty to attend the USAGPAN (army crna program) unless he PAYS BACK all his strap $$$. His service obligation is for reserves and it has to be fulfilled in reserves or agr. Active duty and Reserves are two different peices of cake.
good luck,

I am a STRAP nurse in the Army Reserve working on my BSN online. I also have opted for healthcare loan repayment. It is the common way to go. I am a full time student and I work full time as well. I am a busy, busy guy, but it can be done. So far, I am pleased with this solution. Let me know if you have any questions.
Good luck.
