Does your facility use PBDS testing?

Hello-

New here and not sure how to make this a sticky or if that would be allowed. I know that this is a volatile topic that has been expanded on somewhat already, but I am really just looking for a simple sticky list of facilities that use it, without lenghty (even though well deserved) editorials attached:chair:.

I am wondering which hospitals require PBDS testing, which travel companies require it and in what capacity does the facility use it? ("merit" raises, new hires, screening tool, hire/fire tool).

If for any reason you can not put down the facility, please put down your location. If over 500 hospitals are using it I imagine that we could end up with a ton of posts....

Since "fore-warned is fore-armed"... I think many of us would like to know in advance whether or not the facility condones using the PBDS and in what capacity as we are choosing whether or not to apply.

So, does your facility use PBDS testing?:nurse:

Virtua Hosptials in NJ use it for all new hires

At least one of the hospitals in Boise, ID uses it. I hate it. I always overthink everything. Must... learn... to stop overthinking!!!! New mantra: *KISS*

Specializes in CVICU, SICU, Tele, NI, PACU.

There are several facilities in southwest Florida that use the PBDS for new hires and travelers. Fort Myers (Lee Memorial) and Naples hospital.

We do it and it sucks. Basically a waste of 2 hours of my life that I can't get back.

Our Lady of the Lourdes in Lafayette la uses it. I took it today. It has been the most intensive orientation test I have had to take to date as a travel nurse.

had never heard of it before, but i can see where it can be used for good purposes. It is designed to trigger areas needed for education in new nurses, new grads and travel nurses.

I have heard that some hospitals demand you pass or your contract is terminated. OLOL uses it for the correct purpose, to educate its staff in individual deficiencies.

the only problem I can see, is that it doesnt factor for poor test takers. Most nurses can do the work all day long with their eyes closed and recognize and manage the various conditions designated in PBDS. But some simply are not great test takers.

Hello, Providence Health Systems in OR uses this system. They say that the longer you have been a nurse the worse you do because you do not add all the details to a treatment or intervention. You get to the point and move on. It is not that you do not think of what needs to be done, you do. Also HCA in TX also does.

It is to determine what you needs to review for oreintation. Also, I was told if you do not pass it the first time you get a second chance but only "one" second chance!

Many travelers are finding out PBDS testing is the biggest mess in nursing history! They have gone to their new assignment unaware they are going to be taking this "test" only to find out they may NOT have an assignment after all! It was designed for assessment, NOT to hire or fire! Some nurses are actually hiring lawyers to see the legal issues involved. PBDS is NOT I repeat a hire or fire test! Beware, check with your agency, recruiter and the hospital about it!

I have heard that some hospitals demand you pass or your contract is terminated. OLOL uses it for the correct purpose, to educate its staff in individual deficiencies.
I had signed the contract, packed up and drove all the way to the next assignment, only to be told I would be staying in a hotel until I passed this test. No apartment until they knew the hospital was going to allow me to work.

I agree with the above, I think it would be much easier for a new grad or relatively new nurse to take this test. Much of what they tested becomes second nature with experience; you don't stop to think through every little step and the rationale behind each thing you do. You also don't react to a situation by doing step 1 then step 2 and so on. You are often doing many things at once.

It's kinda like when you first learn to drive, you're thinking to yourself "slow down, shift, hit the brake, turn the wheel" and after years of experience behind the wheel, you just do it.

I knew before the video was over what was wrong and what needed to be done; but I found it very stressful to have to stop and actually have to think through each and every little intervention. Plus I'm a very slow typist LOL

  1. butler memorial hospital in western PA does not use it
  2. our lady of the lake in baton rouge LA does not use it
  3. memorial medical center in modesto CA does not use it, tho they do use a pharmacology test u must pass 1st time to work.
  4. aurora medical center south near Denver CO does use for new hires as a learning tool, AND as a hire/fire tool for travelers.
  5. my travel company Aureus Medical only requires a yearly pharmacology test to continue assignments.

My facility in St. Joseph MO uses the testing and in all reality it is used to get rid of people in my opinion. If an individual is not familiar with it or has any type of test anxiety it can be a losing situation.

Does anyone know if Leesburg Hospital in Leesburg FL. do the PBDS testing? Looking at this hosp. for a January assignment. Thanks for any input.:nurse:

A fellow traveler asked me one night if I knew what PBDS testing was and I said no. I looked it up and realized I knew VERY WELL what it was and had the horror of taking this test before starting my assignment at Mayo Clilnic. There are no words to describe how unfair and ridiculous this type of testing is. For Gods' sake did we not have to endure enough during nursing school, board testing and every damn time we start a new job or new assignment--MORE tests. Come on---I have 10 years of experience and quite frankly I am sick of testing. We, as competent nursing professionals need to band together and refuse this kind of torture. We already have enourmous resposibility in the work field, stressful long hours and worrying about testing such as this before a job or assignment is CRAZY !! Isn't it bad enough that they have made it so ANYONE can make a complaint against your lisence and you are guilty until you spend thousands of dollars on a lawyer to prove you are competent. It CAN happen to you and it HAS happened to me and the stress, humiliation and job loss I endured is enough to last me a life time. I say we start sticking up for each other (so long as we are consiencious, good nurses) !!!! There is a shortage and yet we are treated like dirt. I went in to nursing because I wanted to care for people and bring a smile to an otherwise gloomy day but most times either co-workers or administration make it so we don't even WANT to be nurses.. Let's turn this around !!!!:nurse:
