Just wondering if it is recommendable to go into OR nursing if you live 50-60mins away from the hospital? I realize there is usually call involved, how do others do it if you are in this situation? Do you feel like you get adequate time off to spend with your family?

You just need to find out what your policy is. We have a scrub that lives over an hour away BUT he has to work every other Sat because he can't take call.
Most of us work 0630-1500 so we have lots of time for family BUT if you are the one responsible for droping a child off at daycare no one is going to be open when you need to leave in the am.
I love the OR and cringe at the thought of ever working on the floor again....

Our policy is that once the call is made, you must be on the unit ready to go within 30min. Some charge nurses are willing to bend a little and go up to 35-40 minutes. The hospital did rent an apartment a block away for those who can't make it back within 30 minutes. There's also a lot of people willing to take extra call. We do every third weekend with a combination of three shifts work and call. Could be 2 work 1 call, 1 work 2 call, or 3 call. Call is broken up into 8 hour shifts.

I used live over 1 hour away, before I moved... but what I did was, the times I was on call, I would stay at a hotel during those call times. The hospital didnt have facilities to use for such times, not even a call room... so my thinking was that it was MY choice to work there living so far away, so I made myself available whatever way i could. i figured it was my responsibility, again, since it was my choice to work there.... but now I have moved to the same state that i work in.... so yeah, thats what I did, but peoplethought that was above and beyond what i was supposed to do... but what else was I going to do to satisfy the call requirement? I just felt the onus was on me to fulfill the call requirement however I hd to do it, because i wanted to work there.....

I live an hour away from my job. I'm still new to the OR, I won't be taking call for another 10 months, but my facility has a house that they use for any of the RNs, Scrubs, and Residents on call who live more than 20 mins away. From what I hear its not a bad way to bond with some of your coworkers.
