Published

Hi, my friends

I am a new comer in bay area and looking for the jobs. So far so bad!!! Anyone here would tell me some lead so I can apply for it. I need to start working ASAP due to financial situation. I would like to work anywhere or facility aroud bay area.

Thank you everyone!

thanks jujube! I have been printing out applications all day! I actually had already applied to the state prison system online so I started caling them today too, to see if I could submit an application directly to them. Thank you!!

How does someone apply for the state positions? Do you think they take new grads?

I wouldn't apply for a state position. With the new budget, 20, 000 healthcare workers are going to be laid off. I work for the city and everyone is nervous about the new budget cuts. We have no idea if RN's will be cut, but it's VERY possible and so, I would highly recommend trying to get something with a private hospital right now. Healthcare in this state and city is not a secure place to be, FYI

I am a new grad RN who has been searching since January for a job in SF. I am interviewing at Atascadero in June and wanted to know what Jujube thought of the hospital and if she is happy there (if she is still there). Forgive me - I am assuming Jujube is a female

Hi, I actually applied to Atascadero back in December and was 'conditionally hired' in February--overall, the process from the time you send in the hardcopy application to the time you will actually begin working at the state hospital is roughly 3 months. Yes, it's a long process.

As mentioned, I was 'conditionally hired' provided I pass the Physical Ability Test (P.A.T.). It is almost similar to the physical test that correctional officers/police officers have to take. I did not pass this test so I am trying to retake it a 2nd time. All I can say without disclosing too much information as per contractual agreement with the state agency is this: Make sure you are in excellent physical condition before you sign up to take the P.A.T. after you pass your QAP and Hiring interviews at Atascadero. But in defense of Atascadero, the staff there were really nice to me when I visited a few times.

Forensic Psych is not for everyone but I do like Psych nursing and I must say I really really love San Luis Obispo area and that was the big 'selling point' for me. I like to surf too. Location was key for me. If I pass the physical test, I will definitely go there. If not, I will hopefully get a job at one of the other CA state hospitals that do not require this test. I'm currently waiitng to hear back from some of those other places. We'll see. Good luck!

mmoffitt,

Addendum to my previous post: If you do not want to take the P.A.T. or if for some reason you do not pass the P.A.T. (I'm not saying you won't pass, I am just tossing out worst-case scenarios here), there are 2 other CA state hospitals that I am aware of which do not require the P.A.T. They are: Napa State Hospital (unfortunately, there were no openings for RNs over there the last time I checked) and Coalinga State Hospital (They are still short-staffed and need RNs from what I was told). You can also send out separate hardcopy applications to these places. It also takes about 3 months processing to ultimately get a job at those places as well.

Good Luck and I wish you the best.

Thanks so much for the information. Good luck to you too.

For me the State Hospital process was much quicker. I had an offer from Coalinga 1 month after sending in my application. It was quick so it just depends on your timing. I start next week so the total time from sending in my application to starting is less than 2 months. Good luck.

Hi jujutube! I just want to ask if you have started working in Atascadero State Hospital already? I applied for the job also. Thank so much.

Jujutube hello there. I just want to know if you have started working in Atascadero, is it a good place to work? I am a registered nurse and I have applied in ASH. Are you getting paid well?

Hi Letdsunshine, I was supposed to go back to Atascadero to retake the Physical Ability Test (aka PAT) the other week but I received a job offer at another State hospital (i.e. no PAT required for hire). I would have loved to have worked at Atascadero but there was no guarantee I would pass their PAT (I already failed the PAT in the past) and at this point, I would be taking a big risk to turn down a definite job offer at the other State hospital. I am out of money now and have to borrow from relatives until my first paycheck comes in.

But in defense of Atascadero, this hospital is in a lovely location (adjacent to San Luis Obispo) and the staff I met there were very nice.

I wish you the best

There are jobs in the Fresno area. Fresno Community Medical Center is a 500+ bed hospital. Kaweah Delta in Visalia has opened a new wing and is totally hiring. They are about 3 hours from the Bay Area.

Thanks for the info.
