I have heard such bad things about med-surg, does anyone have any positive things to say about it? Is it really that stressful? What is so horrible about it? I am going to get a job in med-surg , not because I want to but because I have to in order to ge the job I want in the future. Any positive stories out there?
My personal pet peeve is our floor seems underappreciated by some working in critical care units, I'm not sure I understand that whole line of thinking.
I used to see that from time to time (worked heme/onc/ but with a good deal of med/surg "overflow"). For a while, we were part of the critical care division (our director had flown the coop) and so there were a number of times where critical care nurses would help staff our floor (alot of our nurses had flown the coop with the director lol) It was great working with those SICU/ICU nurses who looked down their noses at us... after a shift on our unit, they certainly changed their tune

Exactly my point - I feel some critical care nurses believe critical care nursing is the "expert" version of med-surg. In my opinion, the nurse develops expertise in both areas in different ways.

I am a newbie, but absolutely love med-surge. Each day is challenging and holds something new. I work at a large teaching hospital in acute care medicine and plan on staying here awile. Best to you!
